Thread: A possible way to have the space and ground games intertwine?
This is just a small idea I had today, and I don't know if anyone else has had any similar ideas or not. Forgive me if there is a post somewhere else on it. Also forgive me if this should have been in another forum, I'm really unsure as to whether this fits here or the GCW forum.
Today, I was cruising around in my TIE Fighter, bored out of my wits. I had a headache and didn't feel like fighting Rebels or pirates or anything. Just seeing the sights and the beauty of space. As I sat, I watched a group of CorSec fighters fly by on patrol, a freighter appear in front of the CorSec space station, apparently exiting from hyperspace...
Right then and there I got an idea -- what if it's secretly a Rebel freighter carrying illegal weapons to their forces on Corellia? What if it isn't what it appears? So I got to thinking about the freighters and the civilian transports I see so often. They appear out of no where and don't seem to serve THAT much purpose. Perhaps I am wrong, but they seem to just be scenery. So, I propose that freighters be "neutral" to players of the opposing faction and that a new ability be given to pilots -- freighter/transport scans.
Using this, let's say a neutral Civilian Transport arrives near Naboo. It seems innocent enough, but an Imperial player decides to scan it. The scan reveals that it's really a Rebel transport filled with well-trained guerrilas trying to infiltrate the planet! If it gets through, there will be a number of Rebel NPCs spawned on Naboo's surface. The Emperor wouldn't like that, so the Imperial player decides to attack and destroy the transport. But when he/she does, a small number of Rebel Fighters -- tier based on the player -- spawn to defend it. Or perhaps it's a freighter filled with weapons, or building equipment, or something of that ilk? Then that'd increase the power or defense of the Rebel NPCs on the planet, or even give them a small base! Same goes basically for Imperial freighters and transports, as well.
Also, certain planets have a high enough Imperial precense as to have transport destruction not make a difference. Naboo, for instance, would not lose much from a few Transports and freighters being destroyed. However, if Rebels begin gathering there in droves and destroying the Imp. ships and keeping the Rebel ones going through, there would be an enhanced precense of Rebels and a slowly weakening precense of Imperials. Other worlds, such as Tatooine or Corellia, are more contested and every freighter and transport could make a difference. Now, what of the Privateer players?
Simple. If they are part of the Smuggler's Alliance, they don't want ANYONE'S transports and freighters adding either precense. After all, the Rebels and Imperials are bother their enemies. CorSec pilots would basically choose to deny both or limit one to access, depending upon leanings. The RSF would bias towards Imperials, considering.
In all cases, there would also be criminals trying to smuggle weapons, spices, etc. onto and from planets. No faction -- save the Neutrals in the Smuggler's Guild, perhaps -- want that to get through and would be fair game for all. Of course, I'm unsure as to the effect the smugglers getting through would have, so it's still somewhat fuzzy.
If one side gets lazy, there will be consequences for the lazy faction and perks for the active one. Let's say Imperial precense on Tatooine becomes large as the Rebels are getting lazy with stopping transports. There are more Stormtroopers than ever roaming the surface of the planet, and they're swarming the towns. Not to mention AT-STs and possibly AT-ATs. The Imperial NPCs are also stronger than normal, if that can be implemented, because of the Imperial weapons and armor transports getting in. With such a secure precense on the planet for the Empire, freighters begin to bring in shipments of starship factory equipment. Before long, there are small Imperial bases scattered all around Tatooine producing space NPC enemies for the Rebels. Now both the ground and space is starting to get swarmed. The Rebels can't go anywhere on the planet without being scanned or attacked, and space is filled with tons of TIE's and, if they're STILL lazy, Gunboats.
If the Rebels decide to finally get off their lazy rear ends and fight back, they must destroy small Imperial facilities on the ground as well as wipe clean the troops. In space, transports must be scanned and stopped and Imperial NPCs dealt with. It will be tough, but the Rebellion can do it if they're determined.
I would emphasize further into some deeper concepts I have for it, but it's late, I'm tired, and I'm getting yelled at. Plus I would like to see if you -- the veterans -- approve of this concept. I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. Good night. ^^
