1. No. You get into space, go to a faction space station, and declare overt if you want to Pvp. There's no TEF in space, and it doesn't affect your ground state.
2. Very much richer and interesting than ground missions. The quest based system makes them have a meaning and a story. The "Duty" missions are useful for just grinding xp (missions you end when you feel you've had enough). The higher level missions are designed to be done in group, so it's a fresh change from the "soloing" in the ground game.
3. There are lots of them posted in the forums, just look around.
4. Yes, but only if you have a crew. They are MULTIPASSENGER ships, so it's normal they are designed to be managed by several people and not just one. I agree that the pilot should be able to shoot at least one gun, but when I'm alone I use my single-passenger fighter.
5. It's slow and seems boring at first. It gets much better when you climb just a little in the profession. At the end I loved the experience, you just have to be patient to get access to the good stuff. It's not that the game is slow and ships don't move well, it's just that the first ships are like novice phase in ground game, you have to get through it to reach the good content.
6. It's a different scale.
7. Amazing, I love that ship.
8. After so many patches and the like, I don't know what the accumulated download is like, but you'll be buying it in a CD, so if there's any download, it won't be large.
9. No.
10. Yes.
11. Just peek around the boards, lots of info around.

Nope... But there are 2 space zones that are full time PVP enabled. Entering one of these zones will set you perm overt. Neutrals must choose a side before entering these zones. Additionally, ground overt is not tied to space overt... to go overt in space you can visit any factional space station and declare overt -2. How are the missions?
I enjoyed them, they mostly consist of 'blow this up' or 'escort that'... Some of them that require you to dock with targets, those quickly became my favorite3. Got any screenshots?
There's quite a few on the forums.4. Are MP ships useful?
As long as you have atleast 2 passengers (not including the pilot) they are great fun... Without the passengers, you're very vulnerable since only a player in the turret can fire it.5. How is piloting?
That's all in the eyes of the player... It's all twitch based, so if you're good with that, it's great... if not, you'll quickly become frustrated6. Hpw fast do ships really go(compared to the speed things zip on the ground)?
They can get quite fast with the higher end engines, one of the faster ships i flew during the 'free for all' time of beta was doing about 800-900m per second7. How is teh vet Reward
Even better in person than the screenshots!8. How long is the download(if you know) on dialup, DSL, and others?
The beta download is a different story than the live download. With all the patches and the beta install itself, it was near 700 meg, but you'll be getting most of that on the CD, and they have already patched out a very large chunk of data that's required for the ground game (that patch was approx 180m)9. Is space laggy?
It wasn't at first. The thing to remember on these types of questions is: We had 1 primary server (SpaceBeta1) that EVERYONE was playing on, later they added 2 more (TC-Prime and TC-Bria, then eventually TC-Valcyn) that eased the load slightly, but most people stayed on SpaceBeta since they had an established char. With that in mind, the ground was VERY laggy (as everyone was clustered in the cities around the space trainers) but space was still quite smooth... It would lag out a bit now and then. Space required a large magnitude more bandwidth than the ground does though, so be prepared for lag in space if you have a slow connection.10. Does space look nice?
It looks just like the screenshots, it's very cool.
Edit for format.
