A group of us were going to try and go up the rebel and the privateer trees so we could have multiple ships to choose from when we get high enough level.

The question is: while we are leveling up piloting skills, can I as a privateer help my friend as a rebel with his missions and vise versa? I know when my friend had declared and I hadn't yet, I couldn't fight even when grouped. Does anyone know if it is going to be this way also in space?

Yep, sure can. And Privateers can help imps, too.

You can, although some missions require you to kill (for example) Corsec and if the privateer is a Corsec too, they won't be able to attack.

However I think them going overt eliminates this problem ..

Make sure you're grouped with them, otherwise they won't be able to damage your mission targets. (this was done to prevent kill stealing)
