During Beta, I specialized in testing ... well ... crap component. I wanted to see if JtL could be played with unexperimented parts using random resources. Here are some lessons that I learned, and some of my tactics. I'm sure that there are better ways to do this stuff, but hey, I only had a few weeks in beta.

1. Crap parts will get your through Tier1. You'll have a lull where Tier2 will be tough, but as soon as you get get Tier3/4 components, fights will get easier again.

2. Don't underestimate your capacitor. In combat, this was my limiting factor. You can survive with no shields and dinged armor, but when your capacitor is empty, your guns don't fire.

3. When chasing down superior opponents, I often emptied my capacitors before dropping their shields. I shot down these opponents by dropping their shields halfway, then not shooting for a while. Once my capacitors had some charge, I'd hit them with another large volley. I could work down superior opponents this way. *(This doesn't work if they regen shields faster than you can shoot. If you discover this is true, it's too late. Run if possible.)

4. In a dogfight agaist multiple better opponents (where they always seems to hit you if you stop to aim), stop trying to target and just shoot whoever you can. Hope that you wear down their shields. This may take a while, but it works.

5. It's better to take out one opponent than wear down two. Any time that you can eliminate an opponent, you make your dogfight easier. Learn to balance this against #4.

6. Regulate your speed. Turning in your sweet spot is very important. This makes speed less important in engines than you might think.

7. Compromise. Too often, you can't have everything. In those cases, pick. (In my case, I never had a droid. I dropped armor for bigger guns. I often flew without torpedoes.)

8. Mass is everything.
