I used to play without the cockpit frame all the time in the Tie fighter series games and Xwing Vs Tie.
It really does help, ALOT.
That said, i acutally like being able to see the cockpit. I like to feel like im flying a ship and not magically wizzing about in space like peter pan.
This is the primary reason why i like the Target lead indicator. Without that, id be back to flying like i was peter pan

I was playing with the cockpit view on and the HUD off.
It would be really hard to play without the cockpit with HUD turned off, because the way to aim is to line up the dashbaord of the cockpit with your target. What makes this challenging is that when you're behind someone, they tend to pull up, so in order to 'lead' them you actually have to put them just out of your vision underneath your dashboard!
It is a lot like a WWII flight sim at that point, aside from being able to come to a complete stop

I'm the kinda guy that likes things natural. I like th eladies without makeup and my cockpit without all those darned displays and lights all over! As such, last night I tried flying some duty missions without using the HUD at all (by hitting ctl+shift+h) and it was amazing!
Here are some of the highlights:
- You can chase down anything you see, which means using the 'hat' to look around. Very fun!
- Missles still work, because the game will target the last ship that shot you, or you can still target them.
- Targeted items have way less boxiness around them
- Without a lead indicator and reticle it's actually easier to lead your target! Believe that?
- NO flashing lights to distract you, just the pretty cockpit of your ship
- Great view of the ships you're chasing down - very emmersive!
- You really can't miss the 'Incoming Missle' sound, so you're good to go unless you happen to be deaf

The one down side:
- You really can't tell how badly you're hurt durring battle until that 'eject' option comes up
If you're looking for a bit more of a challenge you should try this. Not only is it more fun, it's more 'Star Wars'!

I ended up flying a little bit like this because I had HUD turned off for screenshots and then got ambushed. But I'm not quite up to flying HUDless.. I do like the radar display.
Question though: were you flying with the in-cockpit view (with or without cockpit frame?), or the chase camera view? I could see this from the chase camera view, not so sure about from the cockpit view, unless you didn't have the frame on. ^_~ Would definately give things the WWII dogfighting feel!
