Here's an idea I had...
How about making it so that when we hit the "Launch into Space" button, we see a short, clientside cut scene. for example:
1. You hit "Launch" on the starship terminal for your X-wing.
2. It cuts to a picture of the landing area of the starport, with your ship there, full size.
3. Depending on model functionality, you see yourself sitting in the cockpit as it closes... I don't know how feasible; if the models are designed with functional canopies or not.
Of course, since I fly an X-wing, I wouldn't mind seeing my R2 unit being lowered into the socket as well.
4. Your ship then lifts up into the sky, and flies off just like you see the transport shuttles do. Wouldn't be too hard... just change the transport shuttle model with the model for the ship in question.
Also, if you're in a group and boarding a multiplayer ship, you might see the group members running up the ramp, and then the ship taking off as above.
Heck, if you could do these things, it wouldn't be too hard to do a client-side landing cutscene, too.
Just an idea that would make ground and space seem a little less seperate.

I love the idea... Only problem is.. i would prefer the devs to focus more on enhancements... then something small like this.

Small things take little time.

I've been thinking about stuff like this too. I'm just not sure it's very feasible to run a cutscene while the client is trying to load the environment for the next area. If both can be done at the same time, I'd say go for it! If they can't and the best they can do is run both parts in sequence (load screen -> cutscene, or vice-versa) then I can't imagine too many other players willing to sit through double the time it takes to transition to or from space. But hey, that's kind of how hyperspacing between zones works now.Space zones are largely similar so hyperspacing really doesn't change any of the graphics or textures though; I guess it's faster and more forgivable in that scenario.
But yeah, I would love to see my ship enter the atmosphere, see the sky change color, swoop past clouds, and descend on a starport (first or third person view) - and the other way around for take-offs.

stuff like this would just be the living end for me. i would not mind waiting the extra time just to see my ship take off and land.
the absolute best thing they could ever do is make us LAND from space WITH CONSEQUENCES. like dying if we suck and crash. would be an absolute HOOT to be able to fly over tatooine in my ship. thats not too hard since the ground layout can handle it with very few modifications.
the flying in from space is a major challenge, another server set entirely.
but AT THE VERY LEAST, MAKE US LAND on those space stations and LET US HURT when we hit stuff, LIKE ENEMY SHIPS and rocks. now the rocks do bounce off our shields but they should take a shield hit each time and if we collide with an enemy ship WE SHOULD BLOW UP! like in real life ahhaha
make more realistic space combat that way.

Well, my thought was that it wolud be more feasible to shoot the cutscene from the ground perspective - they already said flying through the atmosphere wasn't feasible.
Just something relatively simple - half the work would be just playing the transport shuttlelanding/launching animation, with the player's ship model substituted.
Things like the group members boarding or the cockpit opening/closing might take more doing.
Of course, they could add a checkbox to turn it off if someone's seen it enough.

I love the idea but have to say it's not worth it.
Just like every other cutscene in the gamming world, once you see it twice and the novelty wears off, you will try to skip it everytime. If they don't allow you to skip it, they will get a petetion to remove it.

It would be really cool ifthe starship terminal instead took you to your hangar bay instance, where you could see your ship in scale, walk around it, look at damage, hire NPC technicians to fix damage, climb in and out, load up your droid, swap components in and out, change textures, paint schemes, etc.
It would also be cool if people could look you up and gain access to your hangar via the starship terminal - especially for MP ships. NPCs and storm troopers could also drop in for surprise visits from time to time..
