Do ship modification winglets have any ship performance benefits, or are they purely cosmetic?

Purely cosmetic, weigh nothing, and can cost a lot, depending on the shipwright.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. That’s a shame;
they would have been a great idea/addition if they enhanced the maneuverability of a starship as well. Then they would be worth any cost.

I think they're worth the cost anyway. But, then again, I'm a Shipwright and can make my own.

Hmmm. That almost could open up a new idea. One that people have tossed around for quite some time. The "uglies", mixed Imp/Rebel craft.
Say you start with a TIE/Ln, then toss on a mod to give it a Y-Wing cockpit.
Though, to do those right, you'd have to have them drop the performance of the modded ships, but nothing too drastic.
Worth a look at least to see if it would be feasible.

I've always wanted to see the Uglies in SWG. Though I thought they'd be neater to be something Shipwrights craft as an entire ship (gives them more business). But one or two parts were looted in space. For example, if you wanted to make a TIE-Ugly (TIE Fighter with X-Wing wings) then you'd go up to space and destroy some X-Wings until you loot some wings, four wings, which probably wouldn't take too long (I don't think the loot should be "rare"). Then you take the parts down to a Shipwright and they craft the ship.
If you want an X-Ugly (X-Wing with TIE Fighter wings), then you go up to space, blast some TIE Fighters until you get two wings, bring them down to a Shipwright and they craft the ship for you.
Then this could work for other ships as well... such as TIE Bomber wings, TIE Advance wings, TIE Aggressor wings, B-Wing wings, A-Wing body, Y-Wing engines, Krayt body, Kimogila wings, ect.

Why would they be? Personaly id like to see more POB "ugly" ships. Like a heavy frieghter with a turret on one side and a cargo container on the other. Maybe even a YT1300 with a few cargo containers stuck to the top and bottom of the craft, which would also increase the interior aswell. Also allow shipwrites to craft new sections of ships so that we're not just sticking wings and cockpits of one fighter onto another.

Not at all. "Uglies" are, imo, some of the best looking ships. They each have their nice unique look to them, making them stand out quite nicely.
I'd rather say "is that a rebel or an imp in that X-Ugly" then "is that a rebel or an imp in that JSF".

I hope I'm not the only person here who has heard of Jarril and Sellus's ship(s), Spicy Lady.
It's a YT-1300 with the Arakyd concussion missile launchers removed, and with an A-Wing in their place. The ship can actually divide into two ships, so that the cargo section can drift away, while the pilot remotely operates the fighter section from aboard the cargo section, making a clever distraction, and, ultimately, his escape. I just think that there should be a place where a pilot and a shipwright can enter a request for the devs to design a special schematic, which would be issued only to that shipwright. The devs wouldn't have too much trouble, I guess, and once or twice every month or so, SWG would have a new ship, which would make the space environment more diverse.
Please, Tiggs. I beg of thee: Heed this!

I'd rather wonder what kind of freelancer it is, because I would never wish to see an Imperial pilot flying an ugly. That just defies logic. Maybe a rebel pilot, but I'd prefer the Uglies to be a gift to Freelancers with their lack of any pre-RotW interceptor.

i have too.
they way it works is you can eject the a-wing and pilot by remote so the attackers chase it while you float away in the cargo hold
