I’m 4/3/3/4 Rebel pilot.
I was doing the next mission which was to ‘Terminate the Inquisitor”.
In route I was attacked by a group of tier 4 enemies. I didn’t want to lead them to the mission spot, so I decided to take them out first.

Because of my delay the mission target left the system and the mission failed. To my surprise I was told to proceed to the next stage of the mission, I did, and successfully completed that stage.
I have never encountered a JTL mission that continued if you failed any part of it.
I’m currently grinding out the XP box, and I was wondering if there was going to be a problem when I go to get trained, since I failed the first part of the mission.

The reason why is that you have to meet with the mission target in the next system in either case, so as long as it doesn't get destroyed and gets away, you can fail the mission and still move on to the next part. If the ship was destroyed, you'd have to start the missionover. It was a shock for me as well, but it sort of makes sense.

If I remember correctly, there's a privateer (RSF) mission like this also, you fail part of it, but when you go to the trainer, you get the success and next mission.

like the "tipping the scale" mission. you start off with a squadron of npcs who are awaiting arrival of an enemy, but they are ambushed, and are automatically killed and mission fails, butthen themission continues as theenemy comes and joins with the ambushers, and you have to kill them all yourself.
