Thread: My Thoughts on Ship Mass

I don't usually whine about things, but I'm going to just a little here.

Can we please up the mass on some of the single player ships OR lower the mass oh higher level components?

As it is right now, it's pretty much pointless to get lvl 9 & 10 certification, cause you can't equip any of the single player ships with more than 2 or three lvl 10 parts. For example, I'm about to get Ace Rebel Pilot, and looking at what my options are when that happens, the biggest single player ship I can get is the B-wing. Most of them have about 240k in mass. But looking at the lvl 10 components, their all like 50-60k in mass, so, at the very most, I can actually equip 4-5 things that match my lvl, that's if I don't want to equip any other parts at all. Realisitcally, what you end up having to do is equip maybe 1 or 2 lvl 10 parts and then outfit the rest of the ship with lvl 5 or 6 parts. Of course that's all if your reactor can handle the load as well, seeing as all the parts drain massive amounts from your reactor, yet the reactors from lvl 1 to lvl 10 onlyincrease about 8000 if you're lucky. Seriously, I took a long time today and looked at every single reactor for sale from vendors on my server, the highest one was a lvl 10 that wasa little over 18,000 in output. The one I'm using now is a freaking lvl 6 and is 16,500. What's the point of allthis? I mean, really, what's the point of working so hard to get to Ace Pilot and getting lvl 10 certification if none of the ships you can operate solo will really let you use lvl 10 parts?

Does anyone else agree with me at least a little or am I alone here?

First off, the point of the mass restrictions is to limit what people put on starfighters. You aren't supposed to load up on all level 10 equipment. Each ship is (supposedly, ideally, but not really) balanced in terms of what it will hold, so you need to pick between high defenses, a good engine, or maybe heavy guns. The only ships that don't quite follow this are the massive POB ships.

It also sounds like you're loading your ships out with heavier components than you need. With droid programs, most people run around these averages for mass -

- 2-4k mass 13k regen reactor

-2k mass capacitor

-2k mass booster

-1k mass chaff launcher

-4kish droid

That leaves you a whole lot of room for juggling the other essentials.

Level 10 components are there for specialty roles. Maybe sometimes you just want that huge monster level 10 gun, or a massive engine. But you have to balance it out by taking smaller versions of other parts.

But no, mass should not be upped. If anything the new RotW ships have too much mass.

There's also a lot more to Ace than cert 9 and 10 parts.

Hmmmm....ok, thanks for the info. Let me get this straight then, your saying most people use like lvl 1 parts for all those things you listed above? Cause only lvl 1 or 2 parts have that low of mass. So you're saying, it's best to use low lvl parts for most things, then maybe just have one or two higher lvl items? I guess I get what your saying. It's just that the stats on low lvl parts kinda suck. I'll definitely give things another look, but man, I've literally spent hours looking at every single part for sell on my server and don't see how you can use lvl 1 parts effectively. Anyway, thanks for the reply, I'll do a little more research I guess.

My L10 guns: 42k and 40k mass. (RE'd)
My L10 engine: 42k mass (RE'd)

My B-Wing: 2 L10's/2 L8 guns, L10engine, L1 reactor, L8 shield, L4 booster, L1 Droid interface, 2 L4 armor
My Heavy X: 2 L10's/1 L8 guns, L8 engine, L8 shield, L4 booster, L1 reactor, L1 Droid Interface, 2 L4 armor

Reactor/Capacitor/Engine/Weapon overload is your friend.

Sorta, yeah. Browse both shipwright made and looted gear for what you need. Are you running droid programs? Reactor Overload and Cap Overcharge both greatly reduce the need for those parts. And like Washell posted, it's just a matter of assigning mass where you want it. I like fast ships with good defense, so I dump mass into shields and engines. Some people like bigger guns.

You install parts that do the job. If your ship systems only need 10k power, you shouldnt waste mass on a 14k reactor. If you only have 1 gun, you dont need a giant L8 capacitor with 50 recharge. Part of loot farming is finding the most effective parts, not the highest level, but the most effective. Part of effectiveness is low mass.

Just as my esteemed Collegues have said, loading out your fighter is an artform.

Managing to squeeze in a slightly more powerfull gun that your Cap and Reactor can handle, maybe even sacrificing a front or rear shield entirley (dependant on what you are planning to turn to space dust), is a great challenge, and keep me Flying/looting and searching venders looking for that special piece of the puzzle.

There is allways a Master Shipwright on your Server, the ones i mean are the ones with "the Gift"

Ask Master Pilots (on your server) that you see around where they buy there Equipment. Send a mail to the SW they advise and maybe you could get acomponent craftedspecific to your current ship/loadout

Droid commands are a must, although i have not a use for the Rebel Commands (yet)

For best SW on Scylla Server mail Egrim (un-ashamed Plug for my supplier)

Yeah, what he said

Also, if you loot a lot, you can get some great componants. For example, I got a level 2 capacitor the other day that has 1050 cap energy, 24 recharge, a fairly low power drain, and around 1 or 2k mass (I'm at work, so I don't have the exact stats...) This little puppy will out-perform my current level 6 capacitor in almost every way (and it's only by a few points in the areas that it doesn't...) So, yeah, higher cert level isn't always better.

And just a thought, what in the world would be the point in the larger multiplayer ships if the starfighters could load all of the same components? At first it confused me, but after playing around I rather like the system of component management they have in place. In fact Ilove the fact that chassis don't completely obsolete out and that all levels of components have uses.

I don't want this to turn into a "rebel has this, imp has this" kind of discussion, but DANG, I want more than two forward guns occasionally.

It's interesting on a "Nyah Nyah Nyah" level to have three missiles on the Oppressor-- and occassionly useful-- but three or four forward guns? OY OY OY! Hearing someone casually drop the fact they have three or four forward gunsmakes me snapmy pencil in half dramatically while reading posts.
