Ok, I finished my first quest and killed the Ace, escorted the damaged transport, and all that stuff. Now what? I go to space and there is nothing there to kill. Where do I get new missions to complete, where do I find stuff to kill? Someone told me I needed to declare either Imperial or Rebel faction to continue on. I'm not so sure on that as I want to stay neutral as long as I can. I plan to choose a side eventaully but, don't want to as of yet.
Basic Pilot lost in Space.

Well, now you go back to your trainer who gave you the mission.
He'll then instruct you what to do next or give you your next mission.
Usually, you go through a few story missions which are scripted, but after that, you'll get the choice of duty missions that can be a mix of destory or escort etc.
You can also get missions from space stations in different sectors.
To become a faction pilot, you need to visit a faction pilot trainer. I assume that your freelance at the moment, but if you choose to become a rebel / imperial pilot, you would have to drop all your freelance pilot skills to take up rebel / imperial pilot skills.
So, either choose now, or stay on as a freelancer.

If you started in Mos Eisley, you have joined the Smuggler's Alliance and while you will be mostly neutral, you will have to kill an imperial corvette at the end to master, along with 30 imperial ships in Kessel. You will also not be able to attack Hutt faction ships.
If you started in Kaadara, you have joined the Royal Security Force (RSF) and are strictly tied to the empire. You will have to kill the rebel corvette and 30 rebel ships in Kessel to master and, other than a mission or two where you are hunting down spies, you will be restricted from attacking any other RSF or imperial target.
If you started in Coronet, you have joined the CorSec squadron and will be given the choice of killing either a rebel or imperial corvette and 30 respective ships in Kessel to master. CorSec faction ships are the only targets you will be restricted from attacking.
Choose accordingly.
If I understand correctly, you have already done the first four missions he gave you and he trained you in your first skill box, basic. He should have told you who your next trainer is. That npc will likely have a mission for you to do before he will trian you your first tier 1 skill. Figure out what faction you joined and then check the stickied faq's for your tier 1 trainer location, if you can't remember where your basic trainer told you to go.
