Last night I went up in space to get some xp. My friend who is already Ace pilot went overt to get some faction points. We were doing a duty mission in the Endor system and suddenly my friend blew up. None of us knew what happened untill it seemed like another overt player shot him. My friend didn't stood a chance as we were taking on npc TIE's and he got killed in 1 shot.
My friend's ship was destroyed in 1 shot. Is this a bug? Or did the other one prolly have some very good weapons?

Space Combat is suppost to be quick and swift. 1 shot is a little too swift unless he was already damaged.

Well the numbers from PvE don't mesh will with PvP. A lvl 9-10 blaster does between 3500-4000 damage per shot. At least .6 of that is probably going to shields and armor. Add to that most master ships have 2 wpn hardpoints, so 7000-8000 damage in one volley means your shields disappear, armor disappears, and ship explodes. If you don't die in that first volley the second one surely will kill you. Guns fire 2-3x per second so the battle in this case would end in less than 1 second.
This is how pvp is and it doesn't mesh well with PvE. A person caught unaware has no chance as it will take less than 1 second to kill him. Weapon Overload 3 is part of the problem but in your example it would make no difference. A battle between 2 people who are aware of the other person and fight it out can be quite good, Hitting someone who is actively trying to avoid you is VERY HARD. You can blast away constantly and you might never hit him. A surprise attack is a victory. No way short of the attacker being a horrible shot that the other person will survive.
Some, myself included, would like to see a warning message or alarm, or something that makes overt players stand out on the radar. Many say, "Learn to fly", or "Always keep hitting Target nearest enemy player", etc. I don't think the system in place supports good gameplay, and I think these random 1 sided encounters are hurting JTL in the long run.
So to answer your question, it's not a bug. Being overt is basically trading in all your shields and armor for tin foil and hoping someone doesn't shoot you first. I for one hope this change in the future so that surprise attacks are only possible if the player is asleep at the wheel.
