One of the big problems with SWG is that there's no real way to display your accomplishments (other than putting them in a house and, frankly, most of those items can be bought). There's also a big convenience issue when it comes to personal residences and space ports.
Players should be allowed to set out private landing pads and when a ship is landed at a pad it should be visible to all. Obviously, only the player can list his/her own ship there and only one at a time. I suppose there's no reason a ship couldn't be managed, deeded, and redeeded at the pad.
I think pads should take up a number of lots of course, maybe even based on the "size" of the ship. Tier 1 ships needing a 1 lot pad, and Master (Multi-Player) ships might take a 5 lot pad. (Smaller ships could be used on bigger pads of course.) Or maybe single/dual player ships needing a "standard" pad (there are existing graphics that would probably serve) and POB ships taking a "full size" pad (the existing remote planet starport perhaps).
When choosing to land, players would be offered thier private pad if they have an open one on the planet.
Landing pads would require a good chunk of fairly flat ground, of course.
Also being able to "board" a POB ship when its on a private pad would be cool. To make things interesting, perhaps Master Smugglers (and Rangers?) could be allowed to set private pads on otherwise prohibitted planets.

Great idea, like most other things though, it will probably never happen. I like how you thought through and made it fair (taking up lots.) Let's cross our fingers.

Great idea, though something tells me the devs would never go for it because (I'd imagine) it would require a great amount of new coding, in that there would be different landing places for every player-imagine if each player had their own private shuttleport, the problems that might cause in the game. I think a more realistic approach would be to allow player cities, perhaps only at the metropolis rank, to have full-fledged starports in them.

that was my idea too Announ. I dont see how its difficult to place one terminal in a Major city. Period.
p.s. It's called they dont friggn care

it doesnt even need to show the ship landed! It could just be a little building with a starship terminal in there!

I was thinking things could be handled like this:
The starship terminal is like a hangar directory. When you open it up you can see what ships you have and their locations. You can also search the directory for a ship name or a PC name to see what hangar their ship islocated in.
Once you have the hangar number, you punch it in and are loaded into an instance ofthat hangar where you can see and walk around your ship - inspect the damage etc. You might also have some standard NPCs like a starport administrator who collects landing fees, a binary load lifter droid that you can use to swap components in and out,or maybe a storm trooper squad that's come to "arrest you" for treason against the empire and impound your ship.
I think hangar instances are "doable" and would not clutter up the landscape with more buildings.

Sounds like a great idea not just for gameplay, but immersion value. I like it.
