Which one do you use?

I just use the mouse and keyboard. Is it easier to aim with a joystick?

The answer as to which is best all depends on the individual. I'm sure the specific model joysticks all have their advantages, but I find it easier to control (and more accurately, too) with the mouse/keyboard. I will say that I like the throttle response better with my X45. However, that's not enough reason for me to switch.

It depends on your flying style. Ifwhat you do is justpoint and shoot most of time, no fancy maneuvers, thenkeyboard and mouse is probably for you since aiming with mouse is easier. But ifyou like toperform all kinds of maneuversduring dogfight, joystick is definitely better.

I say joystick, all the way. I have been playing space sims since the original X-Wing, and I've always used a joystick. Go for a joystick with a lot of buttons, that way you aren't always hunting for the right keyboard key in the dark. Also, make sure it has a z-axis (kinda like a scroll wheel) for throttle control. While I have to say JTL has the best non-joystick setup for space flight I have ever played, I still think a joystick is better. And you don't need a really expensive one either. I recently bought a Logitech ATK3 for $32 and it works just fine. I am biased towards joysticks because I grew up on flight sims (reason I always invert y-axis on FPS's; I can't play any other way!).

Joystick is definitely easier to jump in and start flying right away, especially if you have previoust experience with flight or space sims. You can do everything with one hand on the stick, turning and rolling at the same time, etc. Mouse flight takes a little bit of extra practice to get used to, and practice make perfect, so with practice you can be very good with mouse too.

My individual preference is a joystick. Here is why:

- You have more control points. For exmple, you can roll, bank, fire your weapons and release chaff all at the same time
and with excellent control. If you are using a mouse, you have to use the keyboard to roll, instead of a joystick twist.

- Maintaining a tight flight patten is more percise then with the mouse, becase the joystick's base does not move, where as with the mouse, it has to slide around and use the games "movement" software. IE you move the mouse in one direction and it will keep turning.

- I like the feeling of the joystick, it really adds to the feeling of flight, which the mouse does not do for me.

Now do'nt get me wrong, using the mouse is a very viable way to play and for some things like a head to head attack it

is more accurate then a joystick. But for all around enjoyment and function, my vote is a joystick.

I would use a joystick since it immerses you more into the space theme, and I'm all about immersion when it comes to games, just that I don't want to spend money on one because I will probably never use it besides for JtL.

I shoulda asked for one for Christmas... lol

I'm a big fan of the joystick, the fine throttle control is reason enough. There is a reason why modern air forces have been following the HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) philosophy for the last 20 some years. =)

However, if you are going to use a mouse, get a track ball, a lot of them have a few extra buttons, plus you won’t find yourself running out of mousepad when caught up in those crazy maneuvers.

However, when it comes to sitting in the gunner chair, a mouse or trackball is far superior to a joystick. I find I have quicker reaction and smoother more precise movement.

So really I use both my MS trackball and my Saitek X-45.
