Thread: Gunboats and Vettes, a non 'l33t ace' guide

I decided to write this little lay guide based off of having alot of success in teaching these methods to people who arent that good a pilot and struggle through even teir 2 missions.

Firstly gunboats, dont bother with all the stay behind and below 500m crap, for most people that will just get you killed, stay Directly below them, targetting the engines when you start ending up behind it, fly down fast, and come up slowly, directly under it, blasting away and repeat. The gunboats range is 550m i believe, so if your in trouble put that much distance between you and it.

Using this method i have successfully taught many a 'bad' pilot to kill gunboats without taking even a hit, yes while your learning you may get alittle scratched especially if you start clipping through the gunboat. Its best to practice this in lok where i believe only teir 2 nym gunboats spawn. As a note, Imperial Gunboats are alittle harder because its hard for some people to tell the top from the bottom but with alittle practice the same technique works.

The Vette now, alot of people have trouble just staying alive near it. Keep in mind its Weapons can 2-3 shot kill you if you have weak shields/armor, and its Range is 1000m. ALWAYS come in low, and from behind, target a fighter, shoot it once then high tail it down and way, FAST. That will pull the fighters away, when your about 1500m away from the vette, dispose of the fighters either with your friend who is waiting outside the vettes range or by yourself.

NOTE: Bring Missiles, mark 3 protons prefably, this will keep you out of harms way mostly.

The Kashyyyk vette at this point is fairly easy, if you have bomber strikes just use bstrike 1 targetting the number 5 turret, that wont destroy alot of the guns on it and will provide a good distraction for you to come in under the vette and blast it after that its a matter of sitting below the engine doing /match or pressing m with the vette targetting and blasting the shields with missiles. At thispoint its best to just wait until the vette is 6000m from Kash Station if your a NEUTRAL, if your a Imp, wait until its8000m thenwith the engine is exposed, target it and fire on the yellow brackets, if you feel nervous about the top of the ship just use missiles. Then go below the ship and back away from it and just wait until it turns friendly. Your just about done.

The Kessel Vette is mostly the same, even with the two indimidating gunboats, if your a imp, let loose bstrike 2 on turret 5 and move behind the vette and gunboats and pull the fighters off, dispatch them. When you get back to the vette, finish off number 5 or if your not imp manuver down and come right up at turret 5 and take it out. after that, stay under the vette and fire off protons at the shields and the engine. Then move down and away from the vette when its disabled. Let the gunboats safely pass the vette, then just come back up under it and let loose torpedos on the reactor and bridge. Bam your done, It will be slower if your rebel or SA, because Bstrike 2 will take out a large chunck of the vette for you.

Now, go after the gunboats and finish them, they are on a path so they wont rotate around on you, just follow the strategy above and you'll be getting your ace helmet and badge withtin minutes. Now beware, I and others have issues where you DONT recieve a medal even though the dialog says you do. I've never gotten a medal and neither have a few friends of mine, only 1 or 2 people i know have receieved one, I guess just CSR Petition it .

- I support NO DECAY.It should be run like EQ . No 20k price cap on the bazar and everyone can craft. Its has worked for 7 years on everquest and there is no decay plenty of money and no crazy prices.

Decay is only good for crafteres and bad for everyone else.

Some stuff you might want to edit into your guide:

  • Tailfins on imperial gunboats are different in size. Smallest fin is on the bottom.

  • A singlegun on the corvette usually doesn't 2/3 shot you. It has 5 guns on the top, 1 on each side and 1 on the bottom. Thus, approach low and from behind so only1 gun can target you.

  • Top of the corvette has 2 bulges on each side (each bulge housing a gun). Bottom has 4 (decorative) bulges on each side.

Most common mistake I see people make is coming in high from the side. With 6 guns (5 top, 1 side) firing at you the attack ends badly really quick.

General tip: Go to kesseland take a look at the corvette that is of your faction. Target through the subcomponents to see where everything is.

Another tip for people saying they're not sure the up side or bottom side of the ship: use Ctrl-/ (control slash).

This will put your ship in the same position as the main ships (corvette and gunboats). Repeat it a few time when approaching those ships, and you'll be sure about the up and down side (not flying up side down).

It may not work for everyone (I dont't know why it wouldnt) but you have to see the trainer/officer that you got your masters missions from...he will reward you your medal.

It's not something that pops up in your inventory when you get the 'mission successful' text after the corvette goes up in flames. Im a CorSec pilot that chose the empire. I returned to Theed after I got my helmet and jacket andtalked to the Imperial officer who sent me to Kessel.

hope this helps.
