Thread: Y-8 Mining Vessel problems
For mining those are excellent and valid points. There are also a few problems with the Y-8 as a vessel.
First we need some textures, and deffinately the capacity to paint it. Allow customization, even if we have to use space resources to make it like the advanced textutures in rotw.
Second, the issue with dropping items in it has been fixed, we still cannot move them on the z axis (ie up and down). I need bunkbeds!!
Third and most important. Allow us to at least LOOK in your cargo hold so we can see what resources we have. I am not enjopying calculating the % of my Y-8's 35k hold compared to number of resources I have mined. This is a crutial issue for miners to do thier job effectively.
Mining can be a really great part of SWG, we just need some bugs ironed out still. Keep up the good work!
Hm, really hope they fix the z-axis motion bug. Kinda annoying.
But I am really looking forward to the mining bug fixes. Hopefully someday we will be able to very effectively mine resources. Would be a fun break from constant fighter loot grinding :-D
It surprises me there's still so many bugs with the Y-8. All of these bugs have plauged the ship since BETA, and they've never gotten any fix. Really pathetic.
I agree that it's pretty much useless in mining. None of the turrets are placed at a good angle to make mining possible, or defence. And there just plain isn't enough turrets.
The ship has no realadvantage for mining then any other POB ships other then the cargo hold and lasers that are "Y-8 only". We should be able to unload our cargo hold in it, maybe even let other ships "dock" with our Y-8 and unload their cargo into the ship as well. Put some more turrets onto it to make mining easier, and put a "tractor beam slot" on each turret (though equiping one tractor beam to the main weapon slot on the front of the Y-8 will automatically "equip" a tractor beam on all turrets). Y-8 mining lasers need to be more powerful and require less resources so they're easier to make and easier to find.
I want to be able to paint my ship. I hate having it look like every other Y-8 out there. And I want to move items up and down in it.
The Y-8 could really become an awsome ship if the Devs put some effort into it, updated it, added to it, and fixed its many bugs.
I've already reported them through the in-game tool, but I've found three problems with the ship, mostly about the turrets.
First off, using a tractor beam in a turret is not a good idea. If you have a gunner jump in and fire, the tractor beam will look as if it's firing until you jump in the turret yourself (yes, even if the gunner leaves, the beam still appears and makes the firing noise. No energy drain, however. I've also noticed that asteroid chunks respond to the fake beam as though it were the real thing, but they don't get collected normally. More on that later) or if you land. It will remain in the last position the gunner placed it when he stopped firing.
Second bug, as noted above, turrets don't behave as they should with the components they have. Tractor beams in turrets won't collect items, mining lasers won't damage asteroids (/examine an asteroid and its Condition will not change). This is only for turrets, weapons mounted in the Pilot seat will behave normally. I have not had the opportunity to test the tractor beam in the Pilot seat (can't mine at all if the mining laser is in a turret), but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work; the mining laser does.
Thirdly, this is not a bug (I didn't bugreport this), but I feel it warrants mention anyhow. The aft turret (or lower turret) is completely useless for ship defence. It is upside-down in relation to the pilot seat, and rear-firing. That means any attempt to move results in a opposite movement for the gun, meaning your average gunner hasn't got a chance of shooting anything unless you stand still or fly backwards at enemies (which, obviously, isn't possible). What this essentially means is that the optimal three-person crew for the Y-8 mining vessel would have the weapon turret on top, for ship defence, the tractor beam for the pilot (because it doesn't work elsewhere), and if it did work, the mining laser on the aft turret (which would mean a pilot would have to be looking 80 degrees away from an asteroid and any big chunks for the aft turret to mine).
As things stand now, I have had some success at mining alone, with the mining laser in the pilot seat serving as tool and weapon at once I have to mention, however, that the pilot-operated weapon is extremely awkward for someone fresh out of a fightercraft. Special attention needs to be taken given how far off-center the gun is and how massive the cockpit is (an object 50m away from you will appear inside the cockpit). I can operate this ship alone because I am a highly skilled pilot (not just because I'm a Master, I'm also good at combat), but ideally, to take advantage of the tractor beam's enhanced collection rate, the Y-8 should be flown with a competent pilot grouped with another ship equipped with a mining laser. Y-8 operates the tractor beam, and its companion vessel does the asteroid-shooting and bandit-killing. The one disadvantage of this setup is that the Y-8 will be defenceless on its own power, so an operator sitting in an Ops chair (for pilot ability command use such as IFF Scramble) or a gunner for the top turret (with a good weapon) is an option, unless you have great shields. In a pinch, the pilot can jump out of his chair and take place in an Ops chair to activate a command, but this will make the Y-8 stand still for some seconds.
Despite all these problems, I like the Y-8 mining vessel, and will continue to use it in mining efforts. I hope these faults will be seen to properly in the near future to make flying it a more enjoyable (and less lonely) experience.

Some of these bugs are quite case specific. I found that none of mymining lasers at all could damage asteroids when I took my Y-8 up, not even pilot. And rather humourously a fellow pilot in a fighter had trouble getting chunks to spawn after I had attempted on an asteroid.
But while griping about it to a fellow pilot he said he could mine perfectly. I was shocked and asked him to take me up as crew in his Y-8. He could blast chunks off asteroids no problems. And I could blow up the chunks using the turret mining lasers. I nearly dropped dead right there.
He suggested I try redeeding (not really informed advice but just a wild stab at the problem). So I have to find 3 people to help me move all the stuff off the ship again
. Still, it remains to be seen whether this will work. Will check back here when I find out.
To be honest, even with its difficulties, I prefer mining with the Y-8. A cargo hold of 34,375 units is quite welcome. In fact, during a mining session, I mined out two asteroids and was working on a third to get my cargo up to 30% capacity or so.
I am sorry to hear about the problems other pilots are having with the ship.
That reminds me, though; I forgot to mention, in my case, using boosters with the Y-8 mining vessel will work normally until the boosters are powered down (out of energy or manually stopped). The red "bar" on the ship throttle will then decrease slowly, as normal, but when they are mostly gone (in other words, when the ship is nearing its normal top speed), the ship will suddenly stop. I think this ties in with the rubberbanding I've heard about. Perhaps it has something to do with the 119-rated engines and the boosters I am using; I have a top boost speed of 1339.

Do you know if they fixed the problem with furniture? The up and down commands?
Nope, it's still not working.
I think I found the solution to your fake tractor beamcoming from a turretproblem.
Make each weapon its own group, then hit the group button of the tractor beam while in the pilot seat. That switched off the beam for me. You can also switch the fake beam back on like that. I couldn't check if it could pull chunks though because of the problem I detail below.
As for me, I got the turrets working. But my pilot weapon (class 2 mininglaser)is still useless for mining when put in the pilot seat. Doesn't even damage condition.
