Is it necessary for Rebel pilots to become 'overt', in orderto enter Kessel and do the destroy 30 Imp Fighter & Corvett missions?

Yesterday while being ‘overt’, I was half-way through the 30 ship mission, when another player popped up and took me out.
Of course I failed the mission. I got the mission again and just returned to Kessel without going overt to see what would happen.
The mission didn’t seem to ‘trigger’.
I didn’t get any messages saying ‘Destroy Imp Fighters” or the “You must complete this mission before leaving this sector”, the way I had previously when I was ‘overt’.

I assumed I had to be overt, so I simply left Kessel, I didn’t attack anything to see what would happen.
I’ll return to Kessel and try the mission again without going overt and see what happens.

I believe you do not fail the kill 30 mission if you get destroyed. It's an on going count.
That is probably the reason you didn't get the "mission start" or "fail" message.

Actually you do.
If you die during that mission, you've failed it, and have to go back to the Admiral and get it again.
The reason there was no message starting the mission is that it starts when the FIRST of the 30 is killed.

As a side, one interesting thing to note is that if you're grouped, any kill one of your group members make counts for you on this mission. I've done it solo and in a group. You'd be amazed how fast that 30 goes to 0 with 8 pilots working together.

Thx for your help guys.
As someone pointed out, the mission triggered when I destroyed the first ship.
And while we are on the subject; I now have 2 toons on different servers waiting for the Corvette mission.
A Rebel on ‘Bria’ and a Freelance CorSec (Imp aligned) on ‘Tempest’.

if you leave kessel at all you fail.
You go in, you must kill 30.
Get friends to go up or join a group up there. Its the best and fastest way to get the 30.
This mission is very soloable but boring.
