I know that at one point the ability to mine with the Y-8 was broken. Did they ever fix this to where you can mine from the pilot seat? If anyone has been using the Y-8 for mining please share your technique. =)

I'd help if my mission to get the y-8 wasn't bugged.

No, the Y-8 is the mining ship that couldn't mine, and never will mine...
It was a nice idea to add that ship to the game and brag about it on E3, but when it hit the fan, it was just broken.

All they ever fixed with the Y-8 mining vessel was the ability to DROP items, you can't lift them up or down and you still can't mine from anywhere on the ship.

Just deed it and put the deed as a very-not-so-flashy-decoration in your house, it serves a more purpose that way.
I'm angry that JTL bugs don't get fixed at all and that the whole bug-fix system of this game consists of adding
more and more features to the game until the players eventually forgot that the bug existed, until a small majority
which often consists of just me stand up and try to bring all the glitches to their faces.

Gah, i talk too much bullsh!t

In conclusion: We might see a fix for this in late 2007

i can mine with my Y-8,but the real question is..why would i want to.unless you have a crew it only getts a minor result, and to solo with it,unless your in a wimpy system say tatt, collecting iron, its to big and slow to fend off any enemy ships.dont get me wrong it is possable to set up a good Y-8 to solo with but i found not even the 30k+ cargo hold was enough to make me trade in my krayt miner,i mine faster,i can go to kessel and get diamonds and still wreck any enemy that dares to attack me.it took me about 2 hrs to get the same amount of asteroids from the Y-8,which only took me 45 min with my krayt...but thats just me

Would you care to elaborate on how you configured your Y-8 to be able to mine?

In my Y-8, I currently have a MarkIII Mining Laser in the Nose Cannon. I believe I need to replace this with the Elite Mining Laser (Y-8 Only) in order for it to work. My top gun, being a 360 Degree mount is where I mount my Null Blaster for defense and the rear cannon holds the Tractor Beam, which for some reason only allows me to enter and fire the beam. The lower turret also only let me into it when I had the Mining Laser there as well...

So, what's the correct configuration and location to mount weapons in the Y-8?

If I spent more time mining, I'd just equip all the hardpoints on the Y-8 with mining lasers, stay stationary in front of the asteroid, and blow up every asteroid chunk I could. Assuming I had two others to man the turrets, that is. There would be a lot of waste, but I think that would work.

Also, developers have been toying with the idea of adding two more hardpoitns to the ship in the future. I think that would increase its usefulness considerably...

Y-8 works just fine. It's much more efficient than a regular ship. It's not easy to equip and you have to have some crafted components made or it will simply not work. Check the guide, many have success including myself.

Getting off the sarcasm, it is possible to mine with this ship. Overloading the Y-8 with droid commands (I use a flight computer for those who were curious, V.C. Memory Bank 6) and this somehow overrided the bug and you can actually mine in it. If you are in the business I would not recommend flying it too often, since their is no tractor beam an when you try to follow something your really never centered on the target, so the mining macro is out of the situation. But it's a great thing to play with and have friends aboard to mine, my company and I will extensivly research this vessel when they add two cannon slots, or if any new mining ships are released.

Yes, it is possible to mine with the Y-8. I use an Elite Mining laser, and all elite components except for the armor and droid interface, and it mines just like a really big fighter with no tractor beam. The big problem with the Y-8 is the fact that you can't use a tractor beam since it just doesn't collect the smaller chunks, you have to hit it with the mining laser. AND the fact that I noticed there is NO difference in the collection rate between an Elite Mining Laser and a Mark-III mining laser. Both lasers, un-overloaded, will mine 10 units per small chunk. So, with a 34k capacity cargo hold on the Y-8, you'd have to shoot 34 little chunks to get 1% mined which is only about 340 units.

If the DEV's could maybe fix the mining rate for the Elite Mining Laser, so that it doesn't take quite as long to fill up the large Y-8 cargo holds, then the Y-8 would be a viable ship to mine with.
