I konw this subject has been touched on a few times in posts, but i was wondering if anyone knows more detail about exactly what effect exceeding the limits of your reactor has on performance. Is being just slightly in the red (maybe 200 points) just as bad as being way over reactor limits (say 1000 over energy output)?
For my x-wing, i upgraded to a new engine because speed really makes a difference with the new npc ai on tier 4 and especially tier 5 ships. The pattern they fly as they pass you from head on, if you cant keep them in range after the turn its pretty difficult to get them. With the new engine, my top speed and turning speed is much better, but i have exceeded my reactor energy output by about 150pts. I havent really noticed a difference in shields, capacitor, etc. but i was wondering if there is some hard data out there that shows performance drops from having energy use in the red, or if it differs depending on how much its exceeding. Any info would be appreciated.

basically you should not be allowed to even fly when your in the red.. your overloaded on the ground, however I believe it is currently bugged. I know they are fixing this so get your ship out of the red now because when they fix it your going to be grounded otherwise

Going over on reactor enegy will disable you components in your ship starting with countermeasures and working its way up. The way to figure out what is going to be disabled is checking to see if the reactor is over by the same or more energy than what you component drains.
Here is an example:
In my B-Wing, I have all components possible in it including 4 guns and 2 missles and a countermeasure. After all thats is in, my energy is 2k over max. All I have to do to figure out what components won't be working is start at the bottom of the list which is countermeasures and see how much energy it uses.
My Contermeasure uses 500 energy so subtract 500 from the 2k your over (note your leaving the component in there your just subtracting its energy consumption) which leaves you at 1500 over.
Next up on the list is the first Missle Launcher. It uses500 energy so subtract 500 from the 1500 your over which leaves you at 1000 over.
Next up is the other missle launcher. It used 500 energy as well so subtract 500 from the 1000 your over which leaves you at 500 over.
Next up is the first Wepon Slot. This weapon uses 2000 energy. Subtacting 2000 from 500 will give you a negative number (-1500).
This is where you stop. Once you hit the component that gives you a negative number after subtracting is the last component on the list that will work.
In this example, both missles and my countermeasure are disabled and everything else works.
Now if your just over a small amount, like the 200 you said you were over, all you do is look at your countermeasure you loaded (or last component you have installed on the list). If the energy drained is more than 200, the component will work fine. If it were under 100, the component will be disabled.
When your in space and you hit "V" a screen will come up showing your ships stats, over on the right there is a list of your components. If the component has a padlock looking symbol next to it, that means it is disabled.
You only want to use reactor overload when you see components disabled on that screen or if your going to use Engine Overload or Weapon Overload (both of these drain more energy out of the reactor and cause components to disable from energy loss).

Get a droid and a Privateer to program you a reactor overload chip. Problem solved.

If we were not allowed to launch our ship while in the red of reactor energy that would completly defeat the purpose of the Reactor Overload droid programs. Being able to go over the set limit really helps when I'm stocking my Rihkxyrk. On ground with every slot filled I am about 5k over my reactor limit so I need to be able to use Reactor Overload.

Thanx for the replies. So even though im an Alliance Pilot i can still use a Privateer droid overload program? I did check all my components, and when i checked the ship in space, there was a padlock on the countermeasures but they still worked. /shrug
I wasn't sure about the symbol, there is a different one that will show up if it is disabled.
Anyone can use any droid program from any faction, you just need a Privateer or an imp to program droid chips for you with there droid programs.

Thanx again. Good to know.

I think what the bug that is being fixed is that if you do not have a component loaded and you are still over your reactor limit, the game counts as though you have that item "disabled" for purposes of determining your limit.
Not positive onwhat I said abovebut here's my loadout right now:
I am about 1k over my reactor limit at launch
I do not have counter-measures or ordanance loaded.
However all other systems (my three weapons, shields, boosters, capacitor, etc.)work just fine.

I highly doubt that, the only way you would be grounded if your reactor was over limit is if your engine itself exceeded the limit of the reactor. the other systems are automatically shut down to bring your gross usesage back under your reactors maximum. If they were "fixing" this then privateers reactor overload would be worthless.

I took my booster out just so I could use three guns in my Kimolga due to the same over load with energy issue.
Overload program? Hmm I might have to look into that.
