I've seen a lot of peple on the forums complaining about lag. Well, I got to thinking about a few things, and here are some possible solutions to control it. Bear in mind that these are NOT the ultimate solutions, but merely places to start looking for the cause of the lag. I hope it helps.
First, check for viruses. Some viruses that are not detected create lag. And, it's always a good idea to keep your virus scanner up-to-date.
Second, check for spyware. A good spyware scanner, such as Ad-Aware, can detect TONS of spyware. these spyware create a TON of lag. Chances are, this will be the key problem in your machine.
Third, check to see if you're using a Windows BITS for Windows updates. Incoming updates use a fair amount of bandwidth, which causes lag. You may want to adjust some of the settings to update during certain times of the day, or turn it off completely.
Fourth, if lag is a serious problem, turn the SWG BITS off. Again, it uses bandwidth to download their update info, although it's in small chunks. You can also temporarily turn it off to determine if the SWG BITS is causing the lag.
Fifth, if you're using Norton Systemworks, turn it off, save for the virus scan. Systemworks has a bad habit of slowing down machines, because of all the things it needs to have running in the background. It uses a LOT of memory to do that. If you're running less than 512 Megs RAM, turn Systemworks off.
Lastly, if you have an excessive amount of Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) programs running (ICQ, MSN, scanner controls, QuickTime, etc.), turn these off too. There's no sense in having these running if you're in the game. These also use up memory when running, if you're in the game, you're not using these. Why not turn them off and free up memory? These are found in your start bar, down in the bottom right corner of your Windows desktop.
Again, these are not the ultimate solutions to lag, but these are a good place to start looking for where the lag is coming from.

Nice list but there are things you can do in game as well.
#1 way to reduce lag in space:
Turn nebulas down all the way in the CTRL-O window. This gives a huge boost in performance if you're having trouble.
Turning down the particle settings helps too. There are also several options on the launchpad settings that will allow you to tweak graphical performance.

Are you on a cable modem? If so you can get tweak tools to optimize your IP Stack. That can help some.

Yeah, it's the modem that seems picky with the number crunching.

Friends with the same modem dont have it.
That emphasizes the fact that they are quirky. I'm not sayingthat's your problem, but just don't throw it out as a possible troubleshooting area. In my experience with the different connection types (aside from satellite /eyeroll) it's just....quirky.
Dunno how else to explain it. ![]()
