I can make my spaceship pitch up and down at a patheticly hopeless rate by makeing gross gestures with my mouse. The control card says use Numpad 5 and 2 but they don't do anything.
Is there something I'm missing or is this just more pathetic SOE programming?

get better equipment. Pitch, Yaw and Roll can all be experimented on to increase rates. Also, if you are flying full speed trying to do this, you suffer a 'turning penalty'. Slow down to 66% or half and the rate should increase.
Each ship has a sweet spot that turning is most efficient at and it does vary between ships.

Press the alt key to toggle your mouse mode. You should see a little blue cursor to indicate which way your are turning, not a big yellow arrow. This mouse mode is much more sensitive and will allow for much simpler turning. Or you could just bit the bullet and go out and get a joystick.

Thanks. I'll give your suggestions a try if I ever get out of the first dogfightwhere I'm fighting 3 TIEs in a hopelessly pathetic starter craft.
Seems a pretty ridiculous way to introduce people to a new expansion by giving them crap gear and putting them instantly into a no win scenario.

If you're using your mouse to move (and I personally like it more then joystick), you have to go to contorls and change automatic to virtual joystick (not sure what automatic does other then cause me a pain in the butt on my flight controls using the mouse).

I've done the entire first tier of Alliance pilot on my work computerwith amouse/keyboard combo and with the starter ship and not only wasn't I ever blow'd up my shipcomponents never took any damage (never got past my shields). Check my previous post about pressing alt to toggle mouse mode.
