Your faction standing is determined by the squadron you are flying with. For example if you do RSF you will be imp aligned, Corsec is Rebel aligned and Smugglers is neutral meaning you can kill either faction in space.
I have actually tried getting around it with my Corsec freelance, he is rebel aligned in space so I made him imp on the ground and then declared imp in space. You would think that I would then be able to attack rebels... not the case and interestingly enough I was getting rebel faction for being overt imp and killing imps.
As you can see, it is very confusing. The devs should address this. I'm clear as mud. The one thing that sticks with me from this exchange is that as overt Privateer RSF, I can kill Rebels, get imperial faction points, but get neutral prestige points instead of imperial prestige points, so that then I can not enter Deep Space, because:
- When I approach an Imperial Space Station, they require imperial/faction prestige points to enter Deep Space - which I have none, because I only earn neutral prestige points
- When I approach a Neutral Space Station, I can not enter Deep Space because they recognize me as Imperial overt, and will not talk to me
Catch 22. I'm not sure why this is or if its working as intended. The fall out point here is that while I earn Imperial faction points, I earn neutral prestige points. ?!?
Is there a Correspondent in the House?

So don't go overt in regular space? I don't really see the problem here. If you're neutral you declare at the Neutral Station in Dath, spend your neutral prestige points to enter DS and become overt when doing so. This flag sticks with you till you've re-deeded your ships. IE, you're Privateer, you go to Kessel and everything's blue to you. You enter DS, declare Rebel, come back to Kessel and Imps are now red to you.
I guess if as a Neutral you're trying to farm FP in regular space but also get the free repairs from Deep Space. Well, can't have both apparently without some effort.

Wow, lots of inaccurate and off topic info here. Let's clarify a couple of thingsIn Space, there is a difference between being Overt (a declared faction member) and PvP enabled. When you go to Deep Space as a Freelance pilot, you must pick a side. You will be PvP enabled for that side. You will not be Overt. You will not earn faction points for those kills, and there is no way for a Freelance pilot to get into Deep Space in his own ship as an Overt (this is a known pilot issue since launch, still onthe list).Prestige- Alliance Pilots earn Rebel Prestige. Imperial Navy Pilots earn Imperial Prestige. Freelance Pilots earn Prestige. All three are different, and there is no way to exchange or earn something other than what you PILOT PROFESSION says you earn.Freelance alignments- If we define "aligned" as unable to shoot a certain faction's (rebel or imperial) ships, then the only aligned squad is RSF. This is why it is bad for a member of the ground rebels to join the RSF, they will never be able to shoot imperials for faction in space. The fact that SA does the Corvette mission for the rebels means nothing except that the Rebs were on Karrde's good side that day. There is a difference between a squad alignment and which Master missions you get sent to do.Regarding a Correspondent- TomoRainer is the Pilot Correspondent, and posts mainly in the Pilot Forum. He reads and watches here too, but if you have something you want him to see for certain, post in Pilot or send him a PM.
Everything here is correct.
As far as correspondents go, the JTL forum doesn't have one. I do try to keep up with it, but like the sage psikobunny says, the best way to make certain I see something is to post in the pilot forum or PM me. If your issue's more of a shipwright one, IIscandar would be the man to see.
