Apologies if i've missed this in some faq but...
cant u just fire lasers at anyone like in the x-wing vs tie fighter games? in which case how could anyone be covert cantu just blast away?
just interested to know

If I fire on an opposing faction ship will I get TEF'd like the ground game???

No TEFs. Only covert and overt which you set at a factional space station.

Great! Thanks for the quick reply. I was afraid of people camping the newbie missions.

No, they can't attack you, nor can they attack your mission. (Well, they can, they just wont do any damage)

No killstealing in space. Only you and your group members can attack(or be attacked) by your mission spawns.
Also, new players start in their own instanced version of that planet's space along with other new players until you complete your first few missions and train your first free skill box.
So, until you get your first box, its just you and other new players then you get moved into "regular" space once you have a box. It was set up that way in beta to help cut down on traffic and keep the space zones from being filled with tons upon tons of newbie missions
