Is ejecting the same as dying?

I'm not 100%sure what exactly it is since I've always managed to eject before getting blown up, but then I get all these and wounds and battle Fatigue.

I'm also curious about how much you can upgrade a Tie Fighter since I'm almost finished with Tier1. Any suggestions on what I should put into it? I tried to build a Tie Fighter/Ln but that was worse than my Starter ship.
