i was talking to some of my guildmates last night and they said they have exceeded their reactor energy with some high end components and they noticed no drawbacks in space. has anyone else done this? if so then whats the point to having a good reactor with high energy?

I have never done this so it is pure hearsay, if you exceede your reactor enrgy you will loose the use of some componets. The person who posted this said, it takes your countermeasures off first, then it goes up form the bottom of the list....with missiles next then laser type weapons. There was a thread about this, try a search.

Exceeding your reactor by say... 100 or 200 points isn't a big deal

When you hit 300-400-500 mark is when you start taking a hit. What will happpen is some components will only work at a percentage in efficiency. For example going by about 400-500, made my ECM work at like 0.8 (80%) effiecency. The game seems smart enough to hit noncruicial components first.

You can tell by accessing the parts screen in flight (v key). A underpowered part will have a triangle next to it.

It would be nice if we had some control over what gets hit. Maybe I am willing to lose one of my weapons, or take a hit on the recharge of my capacitor to keep my sheilds up. They had something similar in Xwing where you can balance your weapons, sheilds and engines on how much they take from the reactor. If you wanted real speed, you turn off your capactior and sheild generators and your engines would get all of the energy.

I love the current system. Im running a 14.4k reactor in my Advanced, and Ive got just enough spare juice to run Engine Overload 3 and Weapon Overload 3 together. My Countermeasures go offline, but I rarely use them while dogfighting anyway(anything that can launch missiles is my first target).

If I getinto a situation where I need to escape, I hit my "Ahhh!" 1, 2 or 3 macros. Each is tailored to the three systems I frequent most, Endor, Yavin and Tatooine. They activate a hyper jump to the point closes to the station, and then disables WO3. I then go into evasive manuvers at 90% max-speed(around 1k) and start throwing out chaff. Its usually enough to keep me alive long enough to hyper out and repair the damage.

My TIE Oppressor loadout uses about 17k energy (even without activating engine overload), the puny mark II reactor I use in it delivers around 13k (it's made with a reactor overdrive). Yes some components are disabled when I launch but with kicking in reactor overload 4 I have enough extra energy to also use engine overload 3.

Does weapon overload 3 still not use any extra power?

None of the weapon overloads take more *reactor energy* which is what we speak about here. Capacitor energy drain per shot (which is affected by all weapon overloads in some way or another ) is a completly different topic.
