i am currently rebel, and a rebel ace pilot, but i want to change to imp, can i keep the rebel pilot skill and be imp "on the ground", or do i need to drop reb pilot and do freelancer or imp pilot?

If you go imp on the ground, you'll drop rebel pilot.
One new thing i noticed is (i dunno which patch they added it), but resigning from a faction now appears to automatically strip you of your factional pilot profession as well. Just as well though, its always worked that way only now they save you the hassel of having to find the pilot coordinator.
If your rebel, you can only be rebel pilot or priveteer.
Imperial, can only be imperial pilot or privateer.
Civilian, can only be privateer now if they wish to keep their civilian status. Picking up a factional pilot profession now enlists you into that faction if your a civlillan..
