Against Starfighters, you have to get through the relevent shields to hit components and do damage. Sounds like you never broke through the shields.

You need guns with high dmg to shield. You prob have something below .5 right now, maybe even as low as .3.
Try to get something above .5, it will make fights a lot faster.

i just got JTL and i got a mission to help the hutts take over a freighter and i needed to destroy the reactor and engine, i was able to target them with [ and ] but when i just shot at the ship the percentage never went down.
and did the system to get a force sensitive character slot ever change?

Yeah, keep an eye on the shield percentage, once this is down far enough you will start doing damage to the component.
As others said, if you aren't doing enough damage to the shield quickly then you need a better disruptor type weapon.

Disruptors are not very effective against shields. Use an Ion Cannon or concussion missiles to bring down the shields - or find a good reverse-engineered blaster (these usually have penetration percentages of 60-75% vs armor and shield)

To cycle the targets on a ship, hit your "[" or "]" buttons. Those will target the engine or reactor to disable a target.

oooooakay a lot of confussing info here...
Basically...
1. Keep firing till his shields are down (remember there are fore and aft shields. past 50% on the shields usually denotes fore or aft shields have dropped)
2. Keep firing till his armour drops (fore and aft again as the shields)
3. Keep firing, you should now start seeing the targeted componant getting reduced.
Dont know about Ion type weapons doing more damamge to subcomponents though, historically in star wars this is so.

target it press [ or ] til the engine or reactor percentage pops up and then keep shooting the plane til that % is down to 0
