I fought for this in Beta but most people don't seem to care-looks like they would rather play Star Wars Sims than Star Wars Galaxies

This is a really good question. I think SWG would be much more emersive if NPC's actually talked. They do in EQ 2 right? Think how cool it would be to hear Vader or Jabbaordering you around. Hell, even hearing a Jawa or Tusken Raider make some noise would be sweet.
As technology advances, I'm guessing that text boxes in MMORPGS are on their way out.

There is just the little technical issue that whenever you add talking to the game, it requires adding a sound file; and when you add sound files, it takes up disk space...lots of it. This is why EQ2 comes with a zillion CDs, because all the NPCs in that game talk. Until technology comes to the point where voice can be synthesized from text, there is no practical way of adding voice effects on a large scale.

There are a lot of things that should talk... but don't. The starports used to have an announcer, but that was taken out. Protocol droids used to talk, but that was taken out, ect. NPCs around cities should say something when you /converse with them, even if it's just a "hello!" or "get lost!". When you do a certain social action, your character should say something in their native language, or something close to it-- "hello", "good bye", "haha", "scram!", "take cover!", ect. It would really add to the game.
And while we're on the subject of space NPCs, why can't it be made so that when a player sends a /tell to someone in space, their face shows up like NPCs do?

Gosh, I never get tired of promoting my own proposal.

All the radio chatter in Jtls is just a bunch of garbled noises, in other games like freelancer we could actauly understand what is being siad on the radio. It would get rid of the need of that lag inducing text boxes with the bobing heads.

If NPC's could talk you would risk having to hear gung gans talk, don't think anyone wants that, i never want to hear the gung gan at rori space station talk.

Who care bout the gibber anyway? It keeps repeating itself all the time. You actually want them to say:
"Gah!"
"Not bad, *player name*, but you`ll have to do better then that"
"I can shake you " (yeah right, like that ever happened
)
and all that?
I think that would drive me nutz
the gibber i can at least allreadyignore through selctive hearing

Please make the droids in space sound like droids. Beeps, whistles....not some half beep human sounding garble!

maybe with the 20 new devs they hired we'll see something but don't hold your breath. A previous poster was right when he talked about all the sounds and usic being removed.
I think those need to go in first since this "problem" was ignored at launch.
BTW, good info on EQ2-I didn't know it was such a large game-data wise.
