The Star Trek MMOG is in development now. Public beta testing is slated to start sometime in 2006. This should be interesting.

I'm an avid Trek fan, and from the descriptions of that game so far, it's gonna turn out to be just like SWG (or worse). I just hope I'm wrong.

Every single Star Trek branded game that has ever come out has totally sucked, I see no reason for this to be an exception.
What would ya do in a TRek MMOG, since its just a free love utopia in Trek land anyway. Bet ya build faction points by hugging your enemies and trying to get them to do member swaps with you.
"Oooh we want the Klingons to like us so lets send one of our guys to their guild and well take one of theirs so we can understand them better"
mmm..uberiific gameplay

Ahhh, don't be so pessimistic. I actually thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek: Elite Force.

Klingon Academy was a pretty cool game - then again I'm a space-flight-sim freak
This also depends on what era of play we're in. People complaining it's going to be nothing but a pacifist game are thinking mostly of the early Trek shows. Now if they put it in something around DS9,things get a lot more interesting... Cardassian war, anyone?
I for one would have a lot of fun RPingthe Borg, though I doubt they'd ever allow that. Too much of a chance for people not to RP the role and ruin the continuity by expressing too much individuality.
Anyone got a link to a development web page for this? This isthe first I've ever heard about it.

AH! Thanks for refreshing me memory
Starfleet Academy was also a great one. One of the few SpaceSim´s that required real tactics
Loved it!

Saying that every game sucked is a matter of opinion. However, most Star Trek branded games have been less than stellar. What has worked for the franchise has been the First Person Shooter (ie Elite Force) and Strategy/Simulation (ie Starfleet Command, Bridge Commander, Armada, Academy). With the later being more in tone with the Star Trek operatic.
Star Trek has always been more about cerebral drama rather than space battles. And no, its not all carebear hugging the enemy crap. Its more about solving your problems with brains rather than with a blaster. The question is how to translate the Star Trek drama into being fun in a game. With SWG its only two things: crafting and blasting things to bits. One will either scavage for resorces and turn them into an object or you have to kill an endless stream of mobs. This is the typical formula for MMORPGs. This will not work in Star Trek. If the ST Developers follow the mold of fantasy MMORPGs thenI believe it will fail.
Those DEVsmust develop a unique experience that translates the theme of Star Trek into a fun and challenging MMO. And to do that you must go outside the box. For example, combatshould bea last resort and reward players for finding better ways out of problems (not with hugs as implied :mad
. Also, they must substitue crafting for other things like character development or ship management.
The original theme of Star Trek was to not be a "Monster of the Week" show. And so, with an MMO it must not be the "what to kill this month for uber loot" game.
