I keep looting parts in space and they have a RE rating on them? What happens if a SW reverse engineers something?

It makes the stuff better.
How to Reverse Engineer 101:
The item has a value that tells you what reverse engineering level it is. You need to have that many of that EXACT item to reverse engineer it.
IE: a plastisteel Type 4 armor shows reverse engineering skill II
You would need TWO plastisteel Type 4 armor plates.
Give them to a Starship Crafter and ask him to reverse engineer them
He will produce an item that is better than the items you gave him.
If you can get the parts you can get really nice stuff after reverse engineering it. I love my Tier 6 blaster that's reverse engineered.

actually you don't need exacts as much as from the same company that builds that part, for instance: if I have a Kuat Systems "military grade" Droid interface that is a lvl 4 component, I just need 3 more Kuat Systems droid interfaces to be able to RE that component. The name of the component isn't as important as the company that makes that component. Hope I didn't just confuse you lol.

To better explain how it works... when a SW REs something, it takes the best values for each attribute of the components, then improves on them by a random percentage (the max percentage determined by their RE skill modifier)
So say you have two RE level 2 capacitors, one good one with say 1100 Storage and 40 recharge, but it's really heavy at 6500k and drains 2700 from your reactor. The other one is kind of meh, with only 400 storage, and a 16 recharge, but it is much lighter at 2300k and only drains 1250 from your reactor.
The base values for the RE'd capacitor would be 1100 Storage, 40 recharge, 2300k mass, and 1250 energy, then each of those would get a random improvement, say 2%, 4%, 1%, 3% respectively. That would make the RE'd cap now a very uber 1122 storage, 41.6 recharge, 2277k mass, and 1212.5 energy drain.
It gives what would be junk components a great purpose as they might have the attributes needed to change a good part into an uber one.

The company doesn't matter, all that is important is the RE level of the parts.
