I'm a completely novice privateer pilot. I've been doing a few missions for the guy in the Mos Eisly cantina but I'm stuck on a patrol mission I just can't seem to get past. While doing a patrol I get sent to a rendezvous point and have to escort a freighter but it always get blown up by pirates before I can do anything about it. I have tried and tried. I have enough xp to get some training but the guy in the cantina won't train me cause I can't get past this mission. If I abort the mission and go back to him he just gives me the mission instead of training. I am using the ship he gave me completely stock.

Any suggestions? Is there any upgrades a novice pilot can get to help them out? Is there any way I can get training without doing this mission?

Get a wingman.

There are ways to do the mission solo such as using droid commands, equipping your ship with better equipement etc, but the easiest, fastest way is to get a wingman to help you out.

Aside from that, check out the FAQs in the Pilot forum. It will be a better place to get the info you need as well.

I don't think Droid Programs or component upgrades are the way to go, yet. The best advice I can give is to practice. There are some links in the Pilot Forum FAQ to threads that have a wealth of advice to new players, but I can attempt to list some tips.

Learn how your ship turns at different throttle speeds. Your starter ships should turn best aroun 75-85% of max speed.

Practice against the Tier 1s around your local planetary Space Station, and practice where you need to place shots in order to hit, relative to the enemy ship and the green crosshair 'estimate.' Remember that the crosshairs are a rough estimate and rarely the exact spot. Typically, the 'right' spot is somewhere on the line between the target and the crosshairs, usually closer to the crosshairs.

See about getting some help. You don't need an Ace to get past the mission - having another one of the many new players that are around might be plenty.

Good luck, and trust me in that you *do* get better at it.
