After watching the Fan Fest video a few more times I got to wondering what lurks in the mind of SOE, especialy since their proven mantra is to do the least amount of work possible on the game.
I started to wonder..will we actually get big ships that are at the beck and call of players, that they and their crew can fly everywhere, duke it out w/ each other...or...
Have they gone down the road of revamping the current space content in regard to those ships?
By that I mean..have they done something like took the old Vette missions and moved them aboard an actual Vette visible in space, that is actually accessed by docking with it?
Think about it..take the old Vette..take that layout. make a JTL-Vette that functions more as a flying faction base that enemy factions may disable and board in order to perform a variety of missions.
and of course where do we find Vettes in the current space game that have a tendency to try and fly away from the zone?..thats right, Kessel.
so..those Vettes get turned into a combination of a flying faction bases, and a player contolled POB, complete with turrets, plasma leaks, and fighter escort. So not only could the ships get defended by players, they could be boarded by players, who can then man the turrets, fix the leaks, and repair its systems, while pilots fly intercept.
Of course like current PvE bases, the ships are crewed by NPCs romaing the hallways prepared to help defend the ships.
Basically Kessel could be a PvE version of this, and Deep Space the PvP version of this.
I guess given SOE's past history, it seems to me that Capital ships that can be built and flown by PCs seems too much to hope for.
But even if we dont get our very own Capital ships, turning the existing capital ships into places where players can interact would be really cool (heck we have all been asking for boardable ships and stations since JTL came out, perhaps that is what we are going to get?)

what I would really like to see is the current Space Stations (the ones where you have to talk to to land) have an option to dock and be able to enter them. There it would be like a mini-city with a cantina and med center, bazaar, bank, and NPC's to give you missions both ground and space missions.
The way I see it, Capital Ships are only going to be used rarely in a mission.
But I do hope people are able to dock with the SD in Deep Space and man the turrets on that.

I'd love to see that as well. A great place for players to take a break from fighting and mingle with other space pilots.
This would also be the perfect place for shady Smugglers to hang around at.

Funny thing is: The Space Station is allready in game, and we all saw it allready and walk around in it.. assuming that we all did the Tutorial.

How can you sit there and make that statement? Im very curious... becuase they dont add the content YOU want? They spent 6 months painfully rebuilding the combat system (I did in fact hate the CU). If they were going to do the least they could on Galaxies... they would have just left the old system in place. They are also adding content and crunching out bug fixes at a regular rate. Find another game that does a major publish every 2 weeks... didnt think so.
Tho you have made an intresting observation, and interpritation of the video... I dont think thats whats going to happen. I think this is just their way of showing off what they are working on. Will we be able to actually keep the ships? Thats unknown to everyone but the devs... and at this time perhaps they dont even have an idea.
Thats likely what will happen in a sence. I would count on them being "faction bases". As a small crew can operate a Corvette as we saw in Episode 3. But I would still think the devs will make them ownable... it would make space so much more fun. I dont want to have to go to Kessle and board a ship in order to have Capital ship battles.
If you mean have one where players run the ships, and one where its all players... well thats OK, but then its two totally diffrent systems. A PVE version of this would have nothing to do with what your talking about... as there would be nothing for players to do but kill everything on the ship. Which is just the vet... plain and simple.
Thats not too much to hope for at all. SOE is great at getting out content. Its makeing that content work thats their problem... but as it is with every MMORPG company.
In a way it would be cool... but it would alsobe horribly bad. Becuase if a couple people that play 10 hours a day take over the ships then no one else ever gets to use them. Boardable stations and ships would be cool too, dont get me wrong... but they dont belong with player occupiable ships unless its a mission. If you have to board a ship it should be for a strike mission at which you pull out and leave.

Also the fact that in the video we saw... you see the ship hyperspaceing to a place thats not Kessle or Deep Space shows these things are probly going to be free roam. Killing the idea they are locked where they are.
Noval ideas... but I woukd count on a much better, and more dynamic and involving system here.

A very very incorrect statement here. I believe the name of the station the new player tutorial takes place on is something like Freedom Station? Either way its a space station you never see in JTL. All the stations that you do see are nothing like it... watch the intro video again and you will clearly see what Im talking about here.
That was just a simple hallway that introed you to the game... if they were going to make space stations they would have to do a hell of a lot of work to that hallway to make it into a space station..................

*** Im not sure what'statement' talking about here but I have been a paying SOE customer since 1999 when I joined EverQuest for the first time (well actually I was Verant customer, later to be saddled with SOE when they were acquired). I know their mantra quite well. Personally I dont want Publishes every two weeks, especially not Publishes that break things in equal proportion to what they fix. That is not progress and it is not something they should be applauded for. II am happy to wait once a month for a fully tested, fleshed out publish, rather than the rushed mess they put out. As some one who makes their living in Software QA, I have never cared much for "Live Development" because it makes it less important for devs to writre good code the first time, knowing they can always 'retract' bad code from the live servers, and combine that with rushed development cycles, it doesnt make for quality product, just a functional one if the bugs arent too bad.
Tho you have made an intresting observation, and interpritation of the video... I dont think thats whats going to happen. I think this is just their way of showing off what they are working on. ** Again, I do not applaud anyone who churns out lots of content that is not quality, anymore than I consider McDonald's fine cusine. Making mediocre stuff is easy.

**I am also hoping for the same thing, I really am, its just 6 years of seeing what SOE produces has made me wary of anything they show us. Ill belive it when I see it is the tack I am taking.

Nevertheless, I feel a 99% chance that this will be more pork that shipwrights will be left out of. SOE, QUIT SCREWING SHIPWRIGHTS OVER!!!!
