As soon as I got my first box in ship certification, I went out and bought myself a y-wing, and have been using it for a while, though I hate how sluggish it seems. Would it be better to just buy a z-95 and put some new equipment in that?

I think so. I had a mean little Z95 in beta that was loaded with level 5 equipment.
