This 3d radar thing has me spinning trying to find enemies.

I cant turn fast enough to find them and i just lost my ship.

Its not a big deal but there has to be something useful that the radar can tell me i might just have no idea how to read it?

That radar has to be the most confusing thing ever. But here is a little bit of help that might give you a fighting chance.

Think of the radar as having 3 parts. The upper section, the lower section and the center.

  • The Center Section: Identified as the small inner circle on the radar. Dot's (white, yelllow, red) appearing on this screen denote ships that are directly in front of you at unknown distance.

  • The Upper Section: Identified as the area above the horizontal median line of the center section. Once again dots appearing in this section of the radar denote ships that are directly above your ship. The farther away from the center section the farther away from the ship. A ship appearing on radar on the right side of this section is going to be to the right of you.

  • The Lower Section: Identified as the areabelow the horizontal median line of the center section. Once again dots appearing in this section of the radar denote ships that are directlybelow your ship. The farther away from the center section the farther away from the ship. A ship appearing on radar on the right side of this section is going to be to the right of you.

Those are pretty must the basics of how to opperate the radar. Once you get the hang of it, it's really pretty easy.

Its very simple to understand once you know what the dots mean.

Red dots are hostile and will likely fire on you (those are usually mission targets)

Yellow dots tend to be escort targets and those you should be protecting

White dots tend to be "other" entities that you likely can't engage (will make the beep sound if you attack)

Play around with the movement and get aquainted with how the radar moves relative to your movements with the mouse and joystick and you will definately get the hang of it. I need that radar now when I don't have my targets directly in front of me to triangulate their position.

Im assuming you've never played space sims before, so you ae having difficulty 'figuring' out whre radar blips are in relations to your ship in Space....if this is'nt what you mean, Im sorry if Im stating something you already know.

The radar is the basically the standard one used in alot of Space Sims (especially Star Wars), however if you've never used one before, it can be a bit confusing.

Basically its 3 Concentric circles. The first smallest Centre circle is what you can see out of the front window....basically, if you have a blip in this circle, itsviewable in front of you (the exact centre of this radar circle is your gunsight). If its above the centre, if slightly above and infront of you, if its to the right of the centre of the radar itsin front and slightly to the right of you

The second Concentric circle from the centre of the Radar is ships in front of your ship, but NOT viewable through the cockpit window.....thefurther awaythey are from the centre of the radar., the closer they are to 'being behind you' if you see what I mean (soz if this is confusing, it can be sorta hard to explain). A good example is if a Blip is at the top of the radar, right on the border between the 2nd & 3rd Circles of the radar screenit is exactly above you.

Any blips in the last circle from the centre of the radar screenmeans the ships are behind you. Obviously, if the blip is at the top of the radar screen, they are above and behind you etc.

Now a big problem with this type of radar is there is no way to gauge how far away they are from your ship so, you will have lots of blips that might be 4-5km away...to help stop this, I found reducing the radar range to about 2km or so (thats about visual range) stops it from getting to confusing (to change the range is just like the Ground radar in SWG, just click the minus). As you wont be PvPing yet, you dont really need to know whats happening further away. (this changes in PvP enviroment, but dont worry about it yet).

Now there are other things that are nice to know which may seem obvious to some people and not to others......

First colors...Red are attackable enemies (obviously), yellow are Neutral ships but attackable (ie freighters, local patrol ships etc) and white is neutral and not attackable (you cant damage them at all - its either a Space station, Neutral Freighter, or another player).

A large Flashing blip on your radar screen means someone is hitting you with a weapon - if its white its probably another player mistaking you for an NPC ship (it does happen) so ignore it, they cant hurt you. If you have a Red Flashing Blip - prepare for combat cause you are under attack.

Im sorry if this a bit confusing, but its sort of difficult to explain without Diagrams. Hope this helps and good luck!

Think about it as if you were looking at a chrome sphere, or through a really curved lens.

center = in front of you

upper = above your ship

left = to the left of your ship

right = to the right of your ship

lower = below your ship
