I am not in the game and am doing this from memory so if I got the name wrong forgive me. At tier 1 for Rebel you can get a Y-wing and then at tier 2 I see a Y wing "Longbow".
Am I correct to assume thats the Y-wing that has a gunner position?
Does it differ from the regular Y-wing in any other way?

Is it Longbow or Longprobe? In continuity, Longprobes were Y-Wings with enhanced hyperdrives and engine systems for extended missions and scouting.
But I don't play a Rebel, so I don't know. Just thought I'd throw in some useless info.

The Y-Wing at tier one is an older class and requires the gunner. The Longprobe I believe it is, is a newer version and the pilot is all that is needed. As for weapons, the devs added 1 missile hardpoint to the Longprobe (although both of them should only have one). Beyond that, I can't say. I'm only 1221.

Are you saying for the Tier 1 Y-wing that you have to have a gunner?
Or that for the Tier 1Y-wing you have a gunner spot if you have someone who wants to be the gunner?

Both Y-Wing variants have 2 mounting points for projectile weapons. The difference is the vanilla Y is a two seater with the pilot only in control of one gun, and the longprobe is a single seater with the pilot in control of both guns. Packs quite a punch too I might add

How do youget someone to man the gun for the Y-Wing? Do you just simply group with that person on the ground and then launch into space as normal, and that person will be automatically in the gunner's seat after loading?

In Star Wars continuity, in addition to enhanced engines, the Y-Wing Longprope also has improved sensors and often a holocam that records the sector and collectsdata (tactical, research and more). They usually do not have any weapons aboard either, as the scanning equipment and higher level engines usually take up too much space. It is not built for combat but tojump intoa sector quickly, collect data and jump to safety again.
In JTL, of course, the Longprobe version of the Y-Wing is bulkier, a single seaterandthe pilot controls all weapons.

OK, now let me ask this then which is related to why I asked this in the first place. Can I get to the 2nd tier where the Longprobe is available with the feeble starter ship or do I need the Y-wing to get that far?

You should be able to finish 1st tier in your starter ship, but you will have to purchase a player made ship, to hyperjump, as the starter ship cannot leave the sector you start in (ie.. hyper jump). You can buy a Z-95, whichis alow mass (less componets) fighter. Or a y-wing, which has lots and lots of mass but fly's like a brick, and a heavy brick at that. Have fun see ya in space.
