what the frack am I doing wrong? I'm trying the very first patrol mission for alliance pilot.
I go to the first patrol waypoint expecting something....and nothing.
no waypoint update
no system message.
obviously I am doing something wrong, or rather not doing something right

What should be happening is once you reach the first WP is another should appear to go to. Up until you are attacked, I believe.

I just started flying, too. Did two missions so far. I just flew into the waypoint, it disappeared and a new one appeared. Once I flew into the second one, black suns appeared and started shooting at me.

hmmm okay. I've been right on the waypoint marker for 30-45 minutes. no change so far. I'll try a bit longer

Your mission may just be borked. It happened once in a while in beta. Only way to fix it was to land and get it again.

Check your datapad and make sure it's not full - There could be issues with the update.
As far as waiting a long time at the WP, you should have to wait more than 5 seconds before it updates... abort that mission and get it again, that may help.
