if you detroy the reactor you will have diabled your tagret... including weapons...
HOWEVER: Caution is advised, since the enemy will still shoot till his cap runs dry!
On gunboats the easiest tactic is to close in to no more then 560meters and fire from that distance. Cuz the gunboat cant hit you very good at this distance, hence you kill it (normally) before it can inflict much damage on you
As far as I can tell, gunboats have had their range increased; you can no longer stand off at 560m and be immune (I found this out the hard way).
