Thread: My feedback for Jump to Lightspeed
- I cant figure out how to bring up my mouse cursor. Example: So I can select NPC dialogue while in my spaceship.
- UI is impossible to use while in space because there is no way to bring up your mouse cursor.
- Controls are too slow. Why is it so hard to turn? The TIE Fighters all hug your ship likefivemetersaway and when you finally turn enough to catch up, they are going in the opposite direction and you have to do the whole slow turn thing all over again. Any chance to speed up the turning?
- Ships dont seem very manueverable. I know I have my basic ship, but the only control I see was "twist", "strafe", and the basic joystick 'mouse' movements. There is no way to do a twisting strafe. The twisting dive is not very good either and doesnt seem to give much advantage, even it evenw orked at all. Although I only played for maybesixty minutes so I maybe just didnt explore this part of the game yet that much.
- Thethird mission I got was broken. I am a rebel pilot and was tasked with "surveying for supply routes" where you come across a damaged supply ship you have to escort. It went fine up until the point that you reach the supply ship, then your waypoints dissapear and you think that the ship is following you and you have to escort it back to the planetary jump pad thing. But nope the supply ship doesnt follow and when you start heading for the jumpgate the TIE fighters gang up on supply ship and destroy it by the time you can get back to it. THIS WOULDNT BE SO BAD IF THE RADAR WAS SO UNINTUITIVE. There was no targeting icon for the supply ship, IT SPAWNED BEHIND ME and I hoenstly had no idea it was there until it sent me a radio transmission that I was too far away. BY that time it was under attack and I failed the mission. Not impressed.
- The targeting system needs work. Especially in missions friendly mission objectives should have distinctive targeting icons no matter if you have them targeted or not. This will help when protecting supply convoys etc. And to actually know they spawn or exist.
- If you think I am supposed to be able to use that radar on my ship you are smoking too much plant.
- Hit detection seems to be way off. My weapons dont look like they hit the ship, but they do damage. It looks kind of quirky when your laser bullets fly by by a good distance and still do damage.
- UI needs to be overhauled. It is too hard to see targets on the edges of your screen (I know I can move the windows around) but I dont think the icons are bright enough or distinctive enough.
- I was expecting to be able to control sensors and maybe do "scans" and other things that might require skill. Doesnt look like there is anythign but the radar as far as electronics. It all looks passive. Other then fighting and upgrading your ship, there doesnt look like there is much involved in piloting spaceships. Maybe improve on this.
I'm just going to say, fly more, learn more, opinionate later. An hour in space with the newbie ship, without even taking much time to learn the keymap, isn't enough time. Most of your problems would be solved if you'd taken the time you used writing this up to look at a Pilot FAQ, or study your ingame Options menus.

Since I just got it in the Rage of the Wookies expansion I will just give my initial impressions and problems.

Any chance to speed up the turning? You need to learn about yaw/pitch/speed and the relation between them. The faster you go, that harder it is to turn. Try cutting your speed and see if you turn faster.

I've been in space since JTL came out and I'm still perfecting my flying, you might need to give it just a little more time
- Thethird mission I got was broken. There was no targeting icon for the supply ship, IT SPAWNED BEHIND ME and I hoenstly had no idea it was there until it sent me a radio transmission that I was too far away. BY that time it was under attack and I failed the mission. Not impressed. Your main problem with this mission is you had it backwards. You are supposed to escort the supply ship, which means that YOU follow IT where it goes, not the other way around. Your job is to stay with the ship and destroy the TIEs that come to try and destroy it. It's not bugged, you just expected the mission to run like a ground one would, an easy mistake to make. If you have trouble protecting the ship, because it may be hard with the constant waves of enemies, try upgrading yout ship components or getting another pilot to fly your wing.
- The targeting system needs work. Especially in missions friendly mission objectives should have distinctive targeting icons no matter if you have them targeted or not. This will help when protecting supply convoys etc. And to actually know they spawn or exist. They mostlydo. Mission objectives enemies that spawn just for your mission are targets with red squares, mission objective non-hostiles are targeted with yellow squares. Sometimes the ship you have to disable/destroy isn't spawned just for you, its always flying around, in which case there is no special target box, you'll just have to pay attention to your mssion breifing and figure it out on your own.
- If you think I am supposed to be able to use that radar on my ship you are smoking too much plant. The space radar takes a little getting used to, but its not hard once you get the hang of it. It is much different from the ground rader though, you just need to spend more time learning how to understand it. The larget the dot, the closer to you it is, the closer to the center the dot is the closer to being in your sights, closer to the edge is further behind you. Just takes practice, it actually was hard for me to explain that because reading the space radar has become so ingrained for me that I don't even think about it anymore.
- Hit detection seems to be way off. My weapons dont look like they hit the ship, but they do damage. It looks kind of quirky when your laser bullets fly by by a good distance and still do damage. That could be a lagproblem
- UI needs to be overhauled. It is too hard to see targets on the edges of your screen (I know I can move the windows around) but I dont think the icons are bright enough or distinctive enough. You have to choose, your windows, or the ability to see your targets. Not everything in the game can be simplified for personal preference, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and adapt yourself.
Being up in space is mostly about fighting, but once you progress into the higher tiers that fighting becomes much less about just shooting at someone and more about tactics, strategy, and your experience and skill.
That is my feedback. I would say I am 75 percenthappy with my purchase. Hope this helps, and shame on community for not getting these bugs fixed alreadyJust kidding

Thanks for the replies. I tried hitting the alt key and im pretty sure it didnt work. Unless you remaped your keyboard that should bring up the mouse curser. It works for me anyhow. /shrug
THe problem witht he mission I had was that the supply ship spawned behind me. I had no idea it was there. I got a radio message but I could not see the ship. I figured it was "just up ahead". So off I went for awhile until I figured "Nah it cant be this far up ahead". Then I turned and headed to my only waypoint, the planet warpgate. THen I got another radio message that I was too far away. I did not see any icon signifying to me where the ship was. I targeted the TIE fighters, orientated myself, and that was when I first seen the supply ship.Which maybe goes to show that the system isnt perfect and things can be improved. Ah. next time as soon as you hit the waypoint listen for the beep the ship makes when it spawns, then hit the ' key. that will hopefully target the nearest non-hostile, i.e. you target ship.
When I fought I always stayed at top speed because the other speeds just did not feel like I was even moving. Also I seemed to turn faster at top speed then I did at say medium speed. Are you sure you know what your talking about?Yep Maybe adding more space particles so you get more sense that you are moving at the lower speeds would improve the experience. You can increase your space particles in your options menu, though I don't think its really needed because I've always noticed faster turning by...um...turning faster. In a started ship it's not particularly noticeable, but once you get higher quality engines you'll begin to see a marked difference.
As far as hit detection. I dont think I lag. And if I did it would not be my fault. I have a 5M Cable connection. I have a good gaming rig and to me it just seemed like what you shot in real time was not really what you were shooting. The lag may very well NOT have been your fault. Since the CU went live there have been lag problems all over the place, ground and space both.
Thanks for the tips about the space radar. It is still ugly and not very 3d'ish. True, but its what we got, so its what we gotta use.
And as far as the "things to do in space". it is mostly fighting because that is what SOE designed it as. It doesnt mean that is what "space expansions" should be defined as in the dictionary. I would like to see more interaction with the ship as far as sensors. In Star Wars you had r2d2 controlling the sensors. And you had Princess LEA doing targeting tasks. In fact everyone had a role on the ships. It wasnt "auto target", it was scan, figure out what kind of ship, asses strengths, asses the overall situation, device tactic, execute plan. It wasnt just mindless space combat. There was a whole bunch of other stuff like scanning planets, doing recon, all while tying it into the ground combat. I dont think SWG fits the 'real' SWG world. But its just a game, I just think there are better Star Wars games that have come out in the past that are more realistic.
As I said, when you get into higher tiers that is exactly the type of thing you're going to have to do. You charge at a rebel gunboat, or even a TIE aggressor without planning and strategizing before hand and you are going to find yourself chewed up and spit out right quick. There are missions where strategy is going to be the only thing between you and an eject sequence.
As for ship roles, you're flying alone right now. The experience is much different on the multiplayer ships, where you have the pilot flying, opperations running programs, gunners shooting at the targets, people running around repairing damaged subsystems etc. Also space mining has just been added, a definately non-combat space thing to do.

You either don't have the standard mapping applied, or you didn't hit it hard enough.

In most of the escort missions I've had, the ship I'm escorting has been automatically targetted when it exits hyperspace. You obviously haven't done an escort mission before, so I wouldn't expect you to be aware of how the system works. Do not disparage a system you haven't given time to understand.

How dare you? You come to this forum, shooting off your mouth and then you insult the person who gives you a straight answer, and in a civil manner to boot?
And you need to learn how to handle your ship, if you hope to be worthy to call yourself an ace. You need to learn how to use the system in place, not create a new system to suit yourself.

For this, you are correct. Sometimes the visuals do not match up with the actual events. Changing guns to a visual which suits you will fix this. Red/green lasers do not seem to have this effect.

It works, and it works well considering the limited viewspace we have. Get over it.

Perhaps your dictionary needs updating then. Expansion - An added section. Not part of the original. Space - The big void in which planets hang. Space expansion - an addition to the original set in space.
You're judging an entire expansion based on what experience? An hour in a newb ship? Perhaps it might be a better idea to complete all 9 pilot professions before you say there is no content.

Alt key works. It is sometimes inconsistant. Much improvement in my JTL experience now. Yes I tried the alt key before but it didnt work.
And I take back everything bad I said about JTL. The space yacht reward thingie is awesome. It is like a personal house in space. I will float in space forever in this thing. Can otehr ships dock with me? Else how do people get on board? I see a bar and rooms that look like they can be decorated. What is the deal?
I tested the movements more and your right that you do turn faster the slower you go. I still think the targeting icons on the edge of your screen need to be brighter. You can barely see them. They are like transparant almost.
There was an icon for the supply ship because I just did the mission again, but sometiems it doesnt show up. Depends which way your pointing.
I like my new lizard mount and my space yacht. So I cant complain. Plus I get to shoot TIE's. Although I still think the hit detection is wacky, or at elast ballistics. Why do I have bullet drop? Im not sure if there is gravity in space, and if there was I think the bullet drop would go int he same direction, but if I turn in space my bullet drop goes "down" still no matter what my orientation. Im not sure if that is legit.
And yes the radar is still ugly and I dont think I ever want to learn how to get used to it. I think just on principal I am going to totally ignore it.
This is what happens when work is slow, I get helpful.

Can otehr ships dock with me?Sadly no, we've been begging the devs for it since septemberElse how do people get on board? You can invite people on board your multiperson ship when you are in the starport, using the 'invite' button located between 'manage' and 'launch' I see a bar and rooms that look like they can be decorated. What is the deal? It can be decorated, I believe the item limit is either 75 or 100 items. Go nuts!
I tested the movements more and your right that you do turn faster the slower you go.Now try finding the optimal ratio of speed to turning, which is different for everyship. Sometimes its as low as half speed, other times you can be going 80% and turning on a dime. I still think the targeting icons on the edge of your screen need to be brighter. You can barely see them. They are like transparant almost. Actually those icons are only as old as the CU, so I don't even look at them, since I've been flying for a long time without them. So can't really offer an opinion on them
There was an icon for the supply ship because I just did the mission again, but sometiems it doesnt show up. Depends which way your pointing. Justgotta pay attention then I guess, but glad you managed to complete the mission.

Im not sure if there is gravity in space, and if there was I think the bullet drop would go int he same direction, but if I turn in space my bullet drop goes "down" still no matter what my orientation. Im not sure if that is legit. Think about it this way. Your shots aren't really 'dropping' they are going in a strait line, but since your ship is constantly in motion, it appears that they are in relation to you. I think. Physics in JTL aren't eactaly RL standard
And yes the radar is still ugly and I dont think I ever want to learn how to get used to it. I think just on principal I am going to totally ignore it. You'll get used to it eventually, no since ignoring it just because it makes you mad, it doesn't do it on purpose. At least I don't think it does, who knows, it could be just mean that way.
You know there are different radar graphics you can use...
I forget the command exactly, it's something like /ui radar 01, or something...
