I don't see the harm and putting one of these in for the masochists out there. As long as they don't have to be "uber" and I can fly something fast with "TIE" in the name, I'm set.

I want one. All I want to do is to haul around my junk and sell stuff in space. Unfortunately the whole focus on JtL is space combat. I can't tell you how that's going to alienate ALOT of players.

I agree, freighters shouldnt be "uber", but are defensive weapons should be effective. In my mind that means a well armed freighter that is fully crewed should be able to establish itself as a viable and very intimidating vessel to attack by lone fighters.

They should have limited forward-firing/boresight weapons fire from the cockpit, and instead should rely on its rotating turrets. Counter-measures should be plentyful and effective, manuverablity should be very limited, but high top-speed should certainly be an option.

You want a FRIGATE, not a freighter. Going through all the references from the EU, there isn't a single ship classified as a medium or heavy frigate that packed more than a couple of turrets, and many of the largest bulk/modular freighters had none. The YT series freighters are light, at 100 ton capacity (about), and even those maneuver poorly next to a starfighter.

Well my hope is that I'll be able to customize my freighter to handle more or more powerful turrets, a nice increase in speed and a litle additional manuvering to allo wme to break away from a non-tracking torpedo. If the fighter gets in close, i wont be able to evade im sure, but if i can keep the fighter at range with enough fire from my turrets, i'm hoping i'll have plenty of time to break away from a torpedo.

I do want freighters, large ones too...i'll be banking my survival on my customization options.

IF they stick to standard X-Wing games, you have torpedos, which lock slowly, can be targeted, move slowly, but are good enough to put a dent in a cap ship or space station, and concussion missiles which are fast. Either way, you're locked on. The only feasible freighter with decent self defense capability is the YT series LIGHT freighter. A bulk freighter has no chance without escorts. And while you have all those customization options, your freighter isn't gonna be better than a stock Z95 in speed and maneuverability. You don't want a freighter, you want a frigate, and that isn't gonna happen.

Im not expecting a freighter to match a Z95 as a fighter. i wouldnt plan on trying to get in a furball with any fighter. im puting my hopes on the fact that fighters cant take much damage, and with multiple turrets and a fighter in chase mode behind me flying in a predictable pattern, may mean I can punch through his shields and send him down in flames. I expect to take damage also, but honestly Im basically a flying tube with the vast majority of my vessel being empty space or cargo. Holes in my hull is what im likly to get, something a fighter cant endure very well.

My goal is string the fighter along the whole time he is getting punched in the nose with multiple guns. My manuverbailty will be used soley to avoid torpedos fired at long range and my top speed will be used to eventually exit the area. yeah it will take a while to get up to speed, but if I do, Ill be a freight-train to stop.

Now granted, I can understand this might be a bit much for lareg bulk freighters, but I'd think a properly modified medium freighter may have some potential. Bulk freighters may not have the manuverabilty, but may be able to absorb a lot of damage except for torpedos. Regardless if the freighter only has a few guns relative to its size, that 2-3 or maybe 4-6(highly modified, or due to multi-barrelturrest) guns is a bit much for a fighter once you start pounding them. Crap, maybe my frieghter will have rear firing missiles!

Why don't you try any space sim out there and see how a freighter fares against a fighter, some of 'em even allow you to fly freighters. Even if you turtle, a fighter will tear you to shreds.
