Note this isn't like some fleshed out idea that you'd get from Glzmo, or one of them, hell I'm stuill thinking about it.

I've also found that in my thoughts that Imperials should NOT have to use shuttles, nor should rebels. The shuttles we see are those of civilians. (civilian including On-Leave and PvE players under the new factions system) There should now be Imperial shuttles that will take off (Lambda), and from here another idea is joined in. The imperial would be whisked onto a Lambda and carted to the sector they wish to be

for anyone that wants to take the easy way out, then they could just take the shuttle, the good thing about it, is that it is safe, the bad thing about it is that it costs a little more than taking your ship.

if you want to wait around and chat, do so. i still hang out in the terminal area and talk to people when i feel like it. what i do not like doing is standing outside in the lz. just doesn't make sense. in real life, sometimes i feel like talking to the guy at the store and seeing what's up and all that good stuff, and sometimes i just want to take care of biz, and be on my way.

if you want to hang, do so. don't force it on everyone else.

edit: 1 star, how very predictable

I've been slightly changing the original post to be more fluent and cover more fields, so that all the questions left unanswered are answered. May take me a while though

Some time back I asked, not made a proposed, on whether people thought the instant travel option hurt the game. Though I use it all the time, I kind of wondered whether the ability to instantly teleport onself to another planet defeated the whole idea of distances, which the devs had talked about early in game development as something they had thought about.

I kind of liked the idea that travel distances are relative. If you want to go some place farther away, it takes longer.

Similarly, I liked the idea of a trade-off on using your own starship vs. the shuttle. If you used the shuttle, the travel would be instantaneous without going through space, but you'd have to wait. If you used your own ship, you'd have to travel through space, but you could leave anytime you want without a shuttle wait.

Under the current system, I can't imagine why I'd want to use the shuttle for interplanetary travel. The shuttle's really only good for town-to-town travel _ or for non-JTL owners.

Anyway, all I did was ask people want they thought. I got flamed like campfire marshmallow. Glad to see your idea is getting a good reception. It would be fun to ride in a shuttle.

I do like most of your ideas. My first MMO experience was the original EQ, where you had to wait at the dock for the boat, then hang out on the boat and chat with people as you traveled across the sea. I didn't mind it, and I don't think anybody else minded it. It was just the way it was. I think similiar travel on shuttles would add a lot to the immersion of the game.

those were good times...

I dont have time to read all the post but i got the jist of it. I think that the idea of instant travel from any starport to any starport is bad. I mean dantooine and lok are on opposite side of the galaxy acording to the travel map, I shouldnt be able to make a trip there without laying over some where. I say give pilots the same travel restriction as far as starport to starport as the non JTL owners. If the galactic travel comision cant get its transports to fly direct safely i dont see how we would. Personally i miss 10 min starport waits. I meet lots of people that way and allowed for much more player interaction than the mindless insta travel we all do now. 10 min may be excessive but 5 was more than fine.

Actually, this is a good necro bump since the CU/RotW has brought up a major unintended flaw in the Travel system.

The law of unintended consequences:

How did people play pre CU? they tended to get buffed, go somewhere, and STAY THERE for the duration of the buff, most of the time. Uhindered travel works in a system like this because there is an incentive for people staying put, and therefore less overall traffic.

How do people play now? They don't need buffs, they hop around on quests, to hook up with friends, to explore, whatever. Overall, travel has skyrocketed, and we see the effects. The transit/loadin system gets swamped in peak times and people get stuck loading, traveling, launching, hyperspacing, or landing. The quests from RotW require beaucoup travel, and only aggravate the problem. This is why so many people see the different servers go into "Loading..." mode for 5-10 minutes at a time, and can't log in. The login and transit system is the same system.

They will either fix this by re introducing travel times, or by increasing the power of the Transit system, but personally I feel revamping the system for realistic travel wouldn't be a horrible idea.

Balzan,

I really think your idea here is a big step in the right direction. I remember back in the day when the shuttles were all on 10 minute timers. I really wouldn't mind again waiting 10 minutes to reach my destination if it meant I'd be inside an actual spaceship, enjoying the view of space (which is amazing), and interacting with my fellow passangers. The only thing I'm slightly against is the part where you suggest that Rebels get scanned (and this is coming from a hard core Imperial). Anyway, I realope that the powers that be see this thread because I think this idea has lots of potential. There could even be missions that require you to take a shuttle ride like travelling in disguise on public transport in order to not draw attention to yourself as part of a story quest, for example.

Also there could also be the possiblility of the transport being attacked by pirates (especially when travelling to the more dangerous planets. Imagine what it must be like to be helpless on the shuttle, watching out the window at the NPC pirates attack the ship your on, hoping that NPC security forces will come to the rescue. If not, then the pirates board your ship, steal a percentage of credits from all passangers, then leave. That will make for one exighting ride!

I already have to wait long enough to load just once. In Star Trek, they prefer the instant transporter beam instead of shuttle craft. The point is, it is excess material blocking the getting back the real game. Who has had to wait for a plane when their flight was delayed several hours?

Yeah it seems very tough, but I think there needs to be more hardship for rebels. Hell on my server every single planet I go to seems to be Rebel Controlled :/

it should be the otherway around

WE need more general use ships that everyone can use. A whole YT-series:

Z95 and improved Z95 (call em training fighters)
YT-1000 (new design) MP usable by all Tier 1 pilots
YT-1300 (existing) MP for all Tier 2 pilots
YT-2000 (Xwing Alliance) MP for all Tier 3 pilots
YT-2400 (Shadows of the Empire), MP for all Tier 4
YT-3000 (new design) MP for all Master Pilots.

Get rid of auto travel and those MP ships would be being used! If the boats can work for EQ and griffons can work for World of Warcraft, Shuttles where players could socialize, heal, train, craft, conduct business (trade/buy/sell) and email and such would certainly work.

Just put a bazaar and bank terminal (no safety deposit) on each shuttle trip would be desired. Add a pilots club (where you have to have some pilot certification to enter).
Factional cities could have officers clubs added, where one needs to be beyond a certain rank (say Warrant Officer I) to enter.

As far as punishing Rebs... I like the idea. Certainly any "overt" Rebel ships like X-wings, etc shouldn't be allowed to land at a public starport on an Imp controlled world. I wouldn't mind inspections with fines, etc... combat initiated by discovery of opposing factional army or medallions and maybe an option to accept fine and confiscation refused.

I like the confiscation idea... with the opportunity to get back the items with a fee as a "collectors item" or some such later. But I'd say all factional armors should be EASIER to obtain than generic and get rid of the stupid bio-linking. The obvious caveat that one has to be a combatant to don and keep wearing (going on leave should remove the equipment into inventory).
