I would say to get a Dunelizard. If you look at the stats, you will notice that you don't get a considerable improvement on the Dunelizard (in the light-medium fighter department) until Tier 4. I have many friends who are Ace Freelancer pilots that still use the Dunelizard as one of their favorite ships.

Don't buy a Khiraxz or and Ixi. You'll redeed them in less time than it to you to find the blueprints. (I know some people may like/use those models, but I and most I know think those ships are butt ugly and worthless)

use the dunelizard. its a great ship. then train the box for your next certification level..keep the using the dunelizard as the kimo is way to slow and moves like a 'turd in a 100m sprint'.
i just got into the, ixigen. its a decent ship as well (same handling as dune..maybe a bit better + a touch more mass)..but i cant wait to get to the teir 4 ship.

I'm at 2222 privateer and I'm using a Kihraxz mostly. I've also got a Dunelizard. You should upgrade from Syck to Dunelizard as soon as you can, but Kimoglia vs. Kihraxz vs. Dunelizard is a tough call. I've got an edge in that I'm also a shipwright and can craft or reverse engineer my own components to get best use out of the different ships.

Yeah, I agree with just about everybody here - if you're on a budget the Dunelizzard will be able to keep you flying all the way to ace if you're careful about it. It's probably the best all-around investment any privateer pilot can make.
As far as the other ships go - I love the Kihraxz. It's got horribly low mass and only one weapon hardpoint so it's a real bear to effectively outfit the thing. I got lucky with a pre-patch reward engine, then I threw on a quality set of shields and one potent gun. Since that doesn't require a lot of energy a good level 1 reactor gives you enough power with less then 1k mass. Also, one gun means that you don't need a big capacitor and you won't need a booster because the ship's fast enough - of course the booster adds immeasurably to the style. No armor, of course, so you've got to fly carefully.
Since it runs at the speed of the engine - a tiny bit faster, actually - and it's very maneuverable a well-done Kihraxz is a fantastically fun ship to fly and it's great if you're with a group of slower ships who need somebody to take out the A-Wings or faster TIEs.
For solo flying, though, stick with the "space superiority" ships - the Dunelizzard and the Ixyen. They give you enough speed to avoid jousting and carry enough firepower to keep you hitting hard.
