well This Is Like comparing apples and oranges. So start Off with what I miss for the Xwing and Ties series.
#1 Laser Unlinking and convergence. I miss Being able to Set Single/ or Linked fire settings, And On xwings the cross stlye Linking. and I miss My fire Coming to tegether at some point.
#2 Shield, Engine and Laser settings, I miss The control Off Adjust Power settings and Moving shield fwd and back.
I know we have droid Programs But its not the same. I was great at Piloting. so my extra capacitor was My shield gen. I dumped Shields In to the Laser capacitor all the Time.
#3 Missions. Plain and Simple, When you did a Mission for X or T your felt Like you were sucked into the Game.
Now Then things I like about jtl.
#1 Its a MMO, Being online was always One of the Loser aspects of X and T. We didn't have Multi player Til XvsT And even Then It was Limited.
#2 The Upgrades We can do. Being able to Pick what Shild, Engine weapons. Is alot of Fun, Right now Might be frustrating But wait til the shipwrights get it perfected.
#3 The ablity to control Your ships Roll, Yaw and Pitch. That roll Was a severe Miss In the X and T series, and In XvsT you had to hold down a Button for roll. which canceled your Yaw til you released.

I never really had a problem with rolling. I never played XvsT though. I did XW and XWA. I remember having to hold down the button #2 on the joystick when I first played it with my old joystick, but this new one has a separate roll control that works well.
But otherwise, yeah, I miss the ELS settings and Shield balance contols too. The thing of it is, those type of controls just strike me as being common controls that you'd find on any starfighter and would be common knowledge to all as to how to use them... not profession specific.

Does playing AirWarrior 1 - 3 (the first massive online persistant flightsim) qualify me to be old school?
12 years of flight sim exp make me old school?
My original copy of XWing, TIE Fighter,Xwing vs TIE, XWing Alliance....?
Maybe it's just all those AWings stamped on my cockpit that make me old school......
(As a side note, anyone notice that even the tier5 AWings in Kessel pull the same maneuvors all the time. Basically, bank's to one direction, eventually they try to go head on with you.. thats it. I was in my TIE Intercepter at 3322 pilot taking these guys out left and right. I didn't even have armour due to the fact that my blaster was half my mass... hehehehe..)

Having played all the old SW Flight Sims, I'll say that the laser weapons travel WAY TO SLOW. Seriously, the lead times are ridiculous.

Been there and played those.
I think the devs did a pretty damn good job with this all things condsidered. XVT was cool but it was one dimensional.
How many of us have been waiting for a full on MMORPG like this with a Space Sim as part of the game? For once THIS IS STAR WARS. Sure they could fix this or that but damn I can take my character and fly to endor with a group of people buffing in the back of my ship and go kill stuff in the DWB.
It has it's flaws but it's alot better then I expected it too be and it's a first for MMORPG's so I'll give the devs some credit here.
Now if they would just up the ante' and impliment PC capitol ships like the Corvette.
Comeong guys, all the mechanics are already in place.

I really miss the energy management system from the Lawrence Holland games. Shields/lasers/engine actually required pilot judgement in real time.
I also find velocity here doesn't really affect yaw/ pitch, like it did in those games (XvT and XWA).
Agreed on the targetting system here, it's really quite empty compared to the old ones.
I agree that the range is too short- not unlike the ground game where blaster can only fire 64m. I appreciate the level of detail I see on the enemy ships, but beeing right on top of them to shoot them is a little silly.
Also, like every other part of SWG, I find the sound quite sterile and canned. The sounds/music just don't come alive in this game.
However, compared to XvT on that abomination of MSN gaming zone, the lag here is MUCH better.
And as far as the whole enchilada, JtL really does feel like it's pasted the SWG universe together, and I'm travelling from place to place.
However, I played the mechwarrior series of games, and they too got dumbed down as the series aged. Lowest common denominator= $$$. I really doubt a game like falcon 3.0 would ever get made anymore.

TIE Fighter is still in my collection!
Too bad I can't it to run on WinXP
I tried to load the collector's edition a week before i got into beta, i have to get a DOS emulator thingy if i want to play it ![]()
But ok on topic. I think combat is decent, but i think a major problem is with having missiles coded differantly than ships, so you cant target then and shoot them down. That was a great part of the old games, nothing beat chasing down a missile on it's way to your escort/defend target. I dont supppose they can change that very easily, but it would be nice.

Phsyics are well balanced I believe.
About missiles... yeah that changed a lot. But keep in mind in most Xwing games you were flying alone. If you could do the same damage in multiplayer it just ends in missile wars and I guess nobody wants that in an MMORPG.
If you want to experience the old times again, get a DOS emulator. The best I know is dosbox (dosbox.sourceforge.net). In case it runs too slow you could try SoundFX which only emulates the sound, the rest goes fast (and sound is usually the problem with DOS games in xp).

It's still possible to use your pilot skill against missles/torpedos, you just have to be fast about it. I used to play XvT competetivly on Zone.com (for RLmoney/prizes). It's still possible in JTL to get that missle turned around and hit whatever target you want...even if it thinks it's chasing you. This past sunday night I was able to turn a proton torpedo around and destroy a nova courier (player) with his own missle in a duel. Takes a lot of practice, but once you get good at this kind of thing, it's really valuable. (I used to play XvT for 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, had a great job that let me do it.)

really? i seriously thought that the missiles were just code that was locked on you no matter what, and only way to stop them was counters. I havnt done any PvP since beta, so i havnt really checked that aspect out (TC is a little lacking in the PvP area)

The proton torpedos don't "Lock" on you quite as good as people think. If you can get SOMETHING (a ship, asteroid, etc.) between you and the missile, it'll impact on that other object and not hit you. I can defeat proton torpedos, cuncussion missles, and space bombs, but the Image Rec missles are dang near insane. They'll actually avoid targets in their path and do loops to get at you. Those are what I use in PvP because they'll avoid countermeasures, and are MUCH faster than the other types of rockets. If I can't beat it...I turn around and use the same stuff (or better). Image Rec all the way for fighters.
