I think the reason for a private forum is because that's going to be the only way to keep Jedi stuff seperate.
As an example, think of the Jedi forum as the Bloodfin forum. It got filled with all kinds of sales posts so they mods create trade forums for each of the galaxies. Even after that, the Bloodfin forum still has tons of sales stuff.
So, even if a seperate Jedi forum were created, you'll still have a bunch of people posting all this holo/holo-profession junk in there and you'll also have all these newb posts asking for irrelevant information.
Now the reason to make it "private" isn't because Jedi are elitist and what not. The reasons I would see are:
1. The devs are sensitive to the release of Jedi data - this would allow a greater degree of control over who gets to see it (since Jedi most likely won't narc on themselves).
2. As it is, all these posts are holos, grinding, patterns, etc are filling the forum with junk and making it extremely difficult to find/follow relevant posts since they keep getting burried.
3. TH has indicated in the past that has was having a hard time telling posts made by Jedi and posts made by non-Jedi. It's hard enough trying to get stuff fixed. It's even harder when the devs can't tell who's posting so they have no clue on how relevant these posts are.
I'm sure there are a lot more reasons to justify a private forum... but I'm tired...

I think its great how everyone tries so hard to find a pattern...as stated before, if there was a pattern, everyone would follow it to a T, and there would be 1 Jedi for everyone 1 Normal char.
Since I havent guessed myself...I'm going with Dancer.
