Thread: Docking Bay 94? My idea to do instanced starports! (This works too!)

I think this is a good idea. A great idea. I also agree that Dynonychus has previously proposed it. Maybe others, too. Still, let more people urge this idea. Is it workable? I have no idea, and I don't think anyone but the devs themselves could say for sure. My only concern is that clearly factional craft (those that would be always overt in space) of opposing factions not be allowed to take off in the same starport, instanced or not. It just seems dumb to contemplate a tie fighter being able to lift off from a docking bay while just mere meters away, an X-wing is preparing to launch. Now, on the other hand, it might be fun if you havea neutral craft that is preparing to launch while stormtroopers or rebel soldiers (or other authorities) are conducting inspections for contraband or covert members of the opposing faction. You enter your instanced docking bay and there's a chance an NPC stormie asks you to wait to be scanned. You could shoot it out and make a run for your ship, Han Solo-style. Heck, it would even be more fun if these instanced bays allowed you to have a ladder for the side of your X-wing and an entry ramp for your YT-1300. Even cooler: little laser guns that pop out from beneath your ship and start shooting at stormies in the docking bay while you're trying to get away.

the only problem is that it could bring the server down, with all the people traveling...

great idea

although the whole thing with stromtroopers in the starports & people selling "contraband" in dark alleys seems a bit unlikely

"Er, I really don't see a problem with overts escaping. What, Overt Rebels escaping? I should hope so as they will have the Stormtroopers that are patrolling the starport on them! You could have a cool gunfight like Han does in the escape in Episode IV. Overt Imperials could be there as a show of force. If Rebels manage to take the starport than thats good for them! They will have to split up and cover all the possible bays which would mean they would not hold it for long. I honestly don't think it would be bad for you to escape in the starport. It would be cool! Controlling starports would actually be important to in the GCW..."

The only problem with this is that I'd rather not see starports as yet another form of faction farming like Kor Vella or Mos Entha.

Great idea! I think it should be like that.

Here are some other ideas to add on to your proposal:

1) In the lobby, it should show on some sort of holo-map. This shows in real-time what docking bays are empty and what docking bays are full. Also, if u click on the holo-map it will show who is parked in what docking bay.

2) For bounty hunters (such as myself) and smugglers, would benefit from Rogue's design... How? It's simple.

-First, bounty hunters and smugglers could work together.

-Second, they find the BH's target's ship in the docking bay using the holo-map.

-Third, when they find the docking bay door, the smuggler can slice the terminal to gain access to his docking bay.

-Finally fourth, the BH can place a beacon on the target's ship (or ships if u are able to park all your ships in the docking bay).

The droids that the BH uses can only find the person when they are on the planet, but the beacon can only be used to find the target in space.

This would be very fun and exciting to do, maybe even the beacon can tell you what galaxy the target's ship is in, and when it takes off and lands.

Of course, the person with the ship can run a diagnosic on the ship to see if they have been bugged, they would however have to destroy the bug while in the docking bay.

I love Rogue's proposal, and i think my addition would add evenmore flavor to the game.

EDIT: Also, another idea which will benefit the GCW. For example, if there is an imperial or Rebel being pursued by the opposite faction, they decide to run to their ship to take off. When they arrive in their docking bay they think they are safe, however they are wrong. The smuggler could override the doors by slicing the terminal, allowing the opposite faction to enter the fleeing factions docking bay. The fleeing factions ship is about to take off, however the opposites faction does not want this and starts shooting at the fleeing factions ship giving it damage.

This feature would be a knock off of the Episode 4's and 5's when the falcon took off from Mos Eisley, and Hoth. The sand troopers and snow troopers were shooting at the falcon.

In turn, the ship has to "power-up" first, before you can take off (the bigger your ship, the longer the time)allowing time for the opposite faction to find you. If they do find you and start firing at you, and you're in a YT-1300, you or your buddy could run down to the bottom turret and try to take out the opposition.

This should be a lot like on "Rebel Strike" for Gamecube, when you are trying to escape from echo base. If the opposition fails to damage your ship so it can't take off, then you will fly away free.

This feature would be a small feature, but overall would add seasoning to the GCW. It would be the fact that you could be able to do it, sometimes that's all that matters.

How do you figure that?

Hi Rogue CloudWalker.

I think it's a great idea, in fact, one of my SWG buds was talking about the same thing.

However, here's an added part to that idea:

When instancing a port, have a wait time of 1 minute (which will probably happen anyways since the server might need to load it). (Making it kinda like waiting for a shuttle... ie. next bay opening in 30 seconds...)
Within that time, if anyone also requests their ship within 45 seconds of the first request then it would add their ship into the same docking instance. That way we'd get to see maybe 3 or 4 ships rather than just yours. Plus it benefits the server in that there won't have to be a seperate instance for each ship, thus reducing memory cost of the instance and hopefully not decreasing server speed as much.

Whaddya think?

This sounds like a great idea.

What I like about it is the idea of reduced lag!

This idea really makes the starport sound like a Star Wars starport. It's a great idea that I hope the devs implement in some way.

Implementing a starport of this size would be a lot of work, an i would cost a lot of time. It is a great idea, but I think we have no chance to get it at the start of JTL. It would be enough content for a whole "Starport Revamp"

Another Idea, I would lik like to see is quite simple to realise. I would like to have the starport seperated ionto two docking bays. The one which it is there now for the shuttles, and another one for private ships. You can load into your personal ship only in the second bay.

You do not store and generate your ship there, it remains there if you leave, and stands still there, when you are coming back. Your ship is only visible by you and your Groupmates. Groupmates only see the ship of their leader, and cannot generate/load their ships. If you want to go into space you have to leave your group.

I think this would not be too dificult to implement, and it would improve the atmosphere of a starport a lot. I do not simply want to go into a starport and generate my ship out of my datapad

Best instanced docking bay idea yet I think.

I think you'd have to put the corridors and stuff underground though so as to not make the starports look a hundred times bigger inside than out.
