I'm the largest power broker in the galaxy, well, all the galaxies actually.. (60M units of power in stock alone.) Frankly I'm just burned out. I want to do something new like space harvesting along with 25 of my closest and dearest friends an employees.
Let us mine! Really, there isn't that much difference if it's still just the 10 lots one character gets. They'd have to pull lots from the planet to use in space if harvesters are used. I just don't see the logic in worrying about it messing up the ground economy if done in this manner.
As pointed out, one could easily mine space only resources usable to craft ships or /gasp/ even POWER THEM. Maybe actually have 'fuel rods' they run on.
But please give us more than just combat in this. The dev's don't seem to realize how important this is to us non-combat folks. Sure, I might putter around a tad in my ship, but that isn't enough to keep tradespeople or non-combatants.... what are we supposed to do in this expansion? What will be 'my' purpose to even go into space?
I'm disappointed. JTL is more like Jump to LITE-speed, because this isn't a fully fleshed out expansion.. Even the shipbuilders don't actually need to ever go into space... that's sad.

I'm on a galactic mission to monopolize the entire power industry. I'm just power hungry

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!!!! ... ... ... BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!!! .. ... ... BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!!!!
There, now imagine a little yellow laser making that noise, bouncing off a slowly shriking asteroid. For 4 hours a day.
I would suggest the game EVE if you want to mine in space. Or you could grab a slege, and go whack on your driveway for a few hours for the same feel... Its really fun, trust me.

some type of automation... like nebulae harvesting.. set up a static or roaming collector. I'm not a zapper. Something to do enmass with about 100-200 harvesters.

Not sure if this has been discussed or argued to death yet but...
Will there be space mining? either in the form of 'harvestors' dropped on or near asteroids or gas clouds, an attachment for a ship (mining laser) or some other way?

Been discussed. The answer from the devs was "No. NEVER!"
They feel it will unbalance the economy.

The answer was no, maybe. They say they'll look into it during the beta if there is still interest but not to get our hopes up.

last i heard they said no because it will give ppl that buy JTL an advantage... i say good, ppl that dont buy JTL SHOULD be at a disadvantage. if they keep this attitude theres gonna be lots of things that could have been better in future expansions i bet

It could work if they did not let automated miners be used in space.
Ship has be configured for mining;
1) replace main weapon with a special mining laser for type of resource your mining(useless in combat) .
2) sensor suite must be equip surveying device for type of resource (different suite for each type gas, water, mineral or chemical).
3) pilot must have the survey 4skill from the artisan tree.
Left flora off list.

Giving this a bump for further discussion/attention.
I don't see how this will fluctuate the economy that much as long as all the mined/harvested materials in space can be found on ground also. Say aluminum is found in the same space sector as naboo. Here's an idea: lets make that aluminum "Naboo Aluminum." Just like the stuff on the planet.
To make space mining different as ground mining make space miningonly "Sampling." No space harvestors. But, to give it an edge or purpose for peeps to jump out on their ship and go mine; allow for ships to sample at a muchfaster rate and make cargo in a person's ship available on the bazaar as soon as a person harvests it and chooses to market it. (Other goods could be put in a ship's cargo to be sold also.... spices, weapons....)
However, for kicks I suggest goods bought from a ship's cargo must be delivered by the ship captain to the appropriate NPC city the goods were bought at (for the player recipient). Maybe if the captain does not deliver the goods within a certain time limit have the credits automatically refunded to the buyer and a bounty placed on the captain's head or summat, I'm just brainstorming now.
Inany case I hate to break it to the devs, but if someone does not buy JtL they are already at a disadvantage to the JtL players. The non-JtL players will not have the chances of participating in space combat, the new races, or the new loots used in the expansion.
I hope there's more to do in space than combat.....

I heard there were some new sectors to fly around in...but not new planets.
