Thread: praying for a pilotable Bwing
Basic waymost people fight in JTL: Lock a target, fly straight at guns blazing and blow it up. Target closest enemy while turning and get on its tail 'till everything is dead. How does the B-Wing perform with this style, bad. You need to anticipate the enemy, your own oversteer and throttle up/down with the occasional short burst of the booster to counter your inertia. The better equipment you get, the less skill the pilot needs to be effective this way.
The way I fly a B-Wing in PvE: Incoming enemies, slow down a lot. You can take a hit or two and if you slow down enough you'll be able to take down 2 to 4 enemies in the initial merge while they're still flying nice and tight. Lock a target while they're flying by andstart gettingon it's tail. Now, the rest of the enemies will make distance, group up and come in for a strafing run, you can see this happening on the radar. Break the current engagement, get your sights on a newly formed wing. When you learn to time this right they'll be just turning towards you for their strafing run at 800m distance. At 600m the first goes boom, within the last 600m the 2nd and possibly a third. A possible total of 7 enemies down in the first 30 seconds. The B-Wing has a wide fire spread. If two enemies are flying close together, roll so they are on top of each other in your sights, Top gun hits enemy one, bottom gun hits enemy 2. There isn't a single ship in this game that can kill incoming waves faster then a RE'd B-Wing flown this way.
Just like on the ground: folks aren't in the regular army, or they'd be doing tedious things like patrol, digging ditches, etc and not running to whatever planet they want. In space, folks aren't in the regular Rebel or Imperial Fleet. Our equipment isn't up to "military" spec, and we don't have dedicated maintenance crews. We pay for the necessary maintenance and replace parts frequently.
For the same reason the performance of all craft is slightly out of wack (indeed variable to a certain extent). Now the devs SHOULD make it so that a maxed out B-wing IS better than a maxed out Y-wing... if the B-wing has mediocre equipment, I have no problems at all with a Y-wing outperforming it. I'm not master yet, but it seems apparent the Bwing is broken, though, and this should be fixed.
Incidently for the same reasons of variable equipment, the TIE Defender would be nothing more than an IMP B-wing. 3 weapon slots, 2 projectiles, etc.
Speed faster than an A-wing and more firepower than B-wing is something only elite T5 NPC's and ace pilots with deep pockets (and rare RE/quest equipment) should be able to match.
first: i can manage myself with the mouse and the keyboard to the 3 axis (mouse and keys Q and E for rolling, and W and S to control the throttle.)
second: i start blowing tier3 in my bwing, but i get ***** vs interceptors tier4...better dont try to gunboats!
third: i have an 98/63 engine, 2 experimental weapons, 2 advanced weapons, a 1900 shield and capacitor, weapon, reactor overload.
i dont want to say that the bwing was broken (well, maybe a bit), but i see what a bwing is and can do, and waht a Kryat (the master freelancer ship) can do and...hey, the kryat is fair better tha a bwing (and the bwing its supposed to be the most modern fighter).
but ive been practising with the bwing and i improve my control on it, but still thinking that shall be better than it is right now.
XStarbracer wrote:No, the problem is and you've illustrated it very well, is that SWG threw out the legacy of the Xwing/Tie Fighter games out the window. Most people learn early on using a joystick in JtL is the worse choice you could make because the mouse just works better. I dont know what they where thinking when they designed JtL, they shoulda just kept to the formula of what made the great Star Wars flight sims great. If you people think this is good, your not a true star wars ace pilot, your a ace pilot of a pale imitation of true star wars flight.
I have to say that you're crazy I started JtL with a joystick and still use that joystick. My only problem is it's a rather old thing so it tends to give false readings to the left when I'm not touching it :/
You can set the X-Axis to roll if that's your problem, just go into space then CTRL+O, Controls, Set Keymap, Space, Roll. You want to set move left/right to something so you can do that if you want.
