Thread: praying for a pilotable Bwing

When I originally made my post (second in the thread) I was anxious to get back on my server, here is some more detail.

Flying a bwing is very much a feel that you get used too, but good equipment is essential.

In my bwing I have an uber rare looted reactor that is 35k energy and only 25k mass RE'd. This allows lots of room for big guns. I done even need reactor overload chips. I have 4 guns which do close to 4k damage on 3 of them and one that is almost 3k damage. I use engine overload 3 chip and I have a uber rare loot engine which is 103 top speed with 70+ ypr. (it is around 50k mass though, hope to RE it eventually)

So the engine is a big key for me. My normal speed without boosting is something like 1333.

Unlock most bombers and bomber hybrids the bwing is less manuverable at lower speeds, I find that my best manuverability is high on the throttle (about 85%)

I generally have to get my target lined up once and my guns finish it off (anything except gunboats). If you watch an NPC bwing fly around you see them "S" around allot. That is basically the way you fly a bwing, the way it feels is as if you are "turreting". Most targets will be more manuverable in yaw and pitch, but mixing yaw and pitch with the right amount of roll seems to have an exponential effect on your manuverability. I use a mouse, have never used a joystick with JTL.

Most people I know never even use roll, but regardless of what you are flying from the fastest awing to the slowest bomber using roll in just the right amount will allow you to quickly get on your enemy's six.

i would say parts abig part of it, and learning to roll correctly. In most of the fighters you dont have to deal with oversteer and if you do oversteer too much you can quickly correct, with the bwing you have to anticipate your oversteer and use it as part of your positioning. This is where the "feel" comes into play.

The chips I use on my bwing (dont need reactor overload because of uber reactor) is engine overload 3 (imp), weapon overload 4 (imp) I use WO 4 because I havea shipwright alt and can make uber guns, capacitor overload 3 (freelance), emergency front (rebel) and emergency rear (rebel).

Hope this helps.

Basic waymost people fight in JTL: Lock a target, fly straight at guns blazing and blow it up. Target closest enemy while turning and get on its tail 'till everything is dead. How does the B-Wing perform with this style, bad. You need to anticipate the enemy, your own oversteer and throttle up/down with the occasional short burst of the booster to counter your inertia. The better equipment you get, the less skill the pilot needs to be effective this way.

The way I fly a B-Wing in PvE: Incoming enemies, slow down a lot. You can take a hit or two and if you slow down enough you'll be able to take down 2 to 4 enemies in the initial merge while they're still flying nice and tight. Lock a target while they're flying by andstart gettingon it's tail. Now, the rest of the enemies will make distance, group up and come in for a strafing run, you can see this happening on the radar. Break the current engagement, get your sights on a newly formed wing. When you learn to time this right they'll be just turning towards you for their strafing run at 800m distance. At 600m the first goes boom, within the last 600m the 2nd and possibly a third. A possible total of 7 enemies down in the first 30 seconds. The B-Wing has a wide fire spread. If two enemies are flying close together, roll so they are on top of each other in your sights, Top gun hits enemy one, bottom gun hits enemy 2. There isn't a single ship in this game that can kill incoming waves faster then a RE'd B-Wing flown this way.

Yup, JTL doesn't compare with the other games for one main reason:

Just like on the ground: folks aren't in the regular army, or they'd be doing tedious things like patrol, digging ditches, etc and not running to whatever planet they want. In space, folks aren't in the regular Rebel or Imperial Fleet. Our equipment isn't up to "military" spec, and we don't have dedicated maintenance crews. We pay for the necessary maintenance and replace parts frequently.

For the same reason the performance of all craft is slightly out of wack (indeed variable to a certain extent). Now the devs SHOULD make it so that a maxed out B-wing IS better than a maxed out Y-wing... if the B-wing has mediocre equipment, I have no problems at all with a Y-wing outperforming it. I'm not master yet, but it seems apparent the Bwing is broken, though, and this should be fixed.

Incidently for the same reasons of variable equipment, the TIE Defender would be nothing more than an IMP B-wing. 3 weapon slots, 2 projectiles, etc.

Speed faster than an A-wing and more firepower than B-wing is something only elite T5 NPC's and ace pilots with deep pockets (and rare RE/quest equipment) should be able to match.

Before making post saying te b-wing is broken - why not try to learn to fly it?

First: have the right gear (you can use a mouse if you want?? but..) with ajoystick with rudder control and a throttle you can fly this ship with far greater control than without IMHO

(saitek x36 - x45 or x52 comes to mind ) you have to be able to control all 3 axis in this craft, and you cant do that with a mouse (well I cant)

Second: learn to fly - go somewhere with t1s and t2s and blow them out of the sky - you will learn how the bwing oversteers, and how to compensate for it - you have to get used to "fishtailing". Now when you have some experience in this craft, go after the bigger boys and soon you will be able to solo an isd or take out gunpoints on a corvette in a single strafing run (almost done with the heavy xwing quest - I only need to survive the gunboat now )

Third: the right parts! I find a more offensive outfit is best suited here -

I have to lvl10 and to lvl7 guns, 1missl

a new engine(the new respec'ed ones) with 112speed and 61pyr - that gives me 1250 without boost

1800shield and then theres not much room for armor only a pair of mark III

with this outfit (or better - hehe) you can pack a punch unlike any other craft in this game

So it comes down to learning to use the b-wing, it can be done, you can read in this thread that we now aremany using this as our primary fighter

they could settle the oversteer down just a little bit... it's a wee bit obnoxious.

but as far as being able to do all 3 axis on a mouse... i got great advice from a guy in the tech forums..

map rolle left to mouse 1 and map roll right to mouse 2 then use the keyboard 1,2,3,4 keys to fire guns. (this also let's you fire ina stream of constantn bolts once you get the hang of it... pres 1 and hold, pres 2 and hold pres 3 and hold... in a somewhat rapid succession. makes a nice stream of fire, great for turning battles.

my problem with mouse flight is it kills my wrist. But i'll be damned if i'm going to buy a joystick for a game just because the mouse controls suck. I don't need extra BS on my desk.

jtl devs could learn a lot about mouse flight from playing BF 1942 and freelancer... those games have great mouse flight controls JTL does not.

and JTL devs could try using Planetsides turret controls (gunners stay vectored when pilot turns)... Julio told me this was "auto aim" but i think he's a snob... You can tell how pointless POB ships are by how many times you actually see them in battle...

Don't even get me started on mining lol

-----------------------------------------------

I will be playing DDO and BF2:SF.
/salute Bria and so long.

first: i can manage myself with the mouse and the keyboard to the 3 axis (mouse and keys Q and E for rolling, and W and S to control the throttle.)

second: i start blowing tier3 in my bwing, but i get ***** vs interceptors tier4...better dont try to gunboats!

third: i have an 98/63 engine, 2 experimental weapons, 2 advanced weapons, a 1900 shield and capacitor, weapon, reactor overload.

i dont want to say that the bwing was broken (well, maybe a bit), but i see what a bwing is and can do, and waht a Kryat (the master freelancer ship) can do and...hey, the kryat is fair better tha a bwing (and the bwing its supposed to be the most modern fighter).

but ive been practising with the bwing and i improve my control on it, but still thinking that shall be better than it is right now.

No, the problem is and you've illustrated it very well, is that SWG threw out the legacy of the Xwing/Tie Fighter games out the window. Most people learn early on using a joystick in JtL is the worse choice you could make because the mouse just works better. I dont know what they where thinking when they designed JtL, they shoulda just kept to the formula of what made the great Star Wars flight sims great.
If you people think this is good, your not a true star wars ace pilot, your a ace pilot of a pale imitation of true star wars flight.

I have to say that you're crazy I started JtL with a joystick and still use that joystick. My only problem is it's a rather old thing so it tends to give false readings to the left when I'm not touching it :/

You can set the X-Axis to roll if that's your problem, just go into space then CTRL+O, Controls, Set Keymap, Space, Roll. You want to set move left/right to something so you can do that if you want.
