a gross generalization. I'll put my YT, crew of 4 up against any 4 fighters any day of the week.

Yeah, but it suffers from the same problem that the other POB ships have, and that is that if you take all of the crew members of a POB ship and put them in their own fighters they can do whatever task the POB ship was trying to do, but better.

Not to be rude, but you must not PvP much. I don't care how good you think your YT crew is, four pilots in seperate fighters who know what they are doing will eat you alive without breaking a sweat. Even if you have a 3832 shield and the best armor around there are a lot of player ships out there that can still drop you in one hit. By the same token, a lot of player fighters are going to be able to survive a hit from one of your YT's turrets. Are you honestly trying to make the claim that your YT, with its huge hit profile and limited firepower is a match for four seperate targets that are all smaller, more manueverable, pack more firepower, and have more effective shields and armor? The only way you'd "win" in your YT is if you used e-pulse, or if you used one of the new POB engines and boosters to simply run away.
But we were talking about mining, I thought...not PvP.
I have found that when you load the Y-8 with the "Y-8 specific" components you will see a difference.
I have mine loaded with a mining laser forward, mining laser in the upper turret, and a big nasty cert 10 blaster in the rear on the bottom.
Yes, 4 small mining fighters can do the job faster, there's no doubt of that (I can fill my Oppressors cargo hold with 1550 resources in about 10-15 minutes easily). The benefit of the Y-8 is that you can have that upper turret and forward firing main gun for mining, in adition to the massive cargo hold.
Just means I don't have to land as often. I agree, it's "faster" in a fighter, but it is viable to use the Y-8. I'm currently working on mining enough resources to outfit this ship with all of the new POB ship only components as well as the Y8 only components.
Not to talk smack or anything, but your Y8 wouldn't last 5 seconds against any of my fighters solo. POB ships need some major fixes before they are truly viable in PvP.

Though, I would like to add....
I tried taking all the components from my Decimator and putting them into a Y-8 for the purposes of PvE/PvP.
Amazing how well this thing handles. Honestly, I could see it being almost if not more useful than the current POB's. sure, the firing arc's arent that great but the addition of a forward firing cert 10 blaster sure does help!
anyways heres two helpfull macros
Autotargeting
/ui action targetSelf
/ui action cycleTargetOut
/follow
tractorbeam
/ship weaponGroup toggleTractor
put these two macros in your tool bar and follow these rules.
Rule 1
Only free one chunk from the astroid at a time
Rule 2
use the auto target macro to follow the first astroid chunk that breaks free.
Rule 3
activate your tractorbeam
Rule 4
line up till your directly behind the chunk and matched speed with it.
Rule 5
only fire a few shots to break it up
Rule 6
if any small chunks go stray just hit the auto target to follow them.
rule 7
after mining up all the chunks hit the astroid to repeat the prosess. (you may leave your tractorbeam on)
this will mine you a full hall in minutes.
