Thread: So incase you all think mining will be real fun.....

It looks like it will be designed as more of a group affair. The most effective way to mine will probably be loading up that big multiplayer ship an have it gather all the chunks cut off by another small ship. An maybe have another ship or two just flying escort to battle any Pirates that try to attack. On board the multiplayer ship itself there will probably be a few Artisans going through the gathered Asteroid chunks an trying to get good usable resources from it an deleting any junk. To me this team effort seems alot faster than trying to do it all yourself Mining, Gathering, Landing to see if you got anything usable, and trying to stay alive fighting Pirates.

Its all in the implementation.

If you think mining is boring in eve for instance, well it is most of the time, but try it in a contested area of non-empire space, with a group that knows what it is doing.

Mining can be fun if it is done to encompass two elements: The rookie miner who wants to make some money, can't yet make it with guns on the hunt but can on group mining runs because he has the cover support of higher up pilots who keep the bandits off (for healthy xp themselves) and the second, being the 'full circle' master pilot miner, who goes with small groups or solo on the most insane prospecting runs, hoping to hit that rare vein that will make him rich and get out with a full hold and at least 5% of his armor.

Space in JLS will always suffer 'fish tank syndrome' until its feels large (nearing the limits of your sublight drive next to a station?) and plays a role in the economy and power base due to - not great solo pilots - effectively organized groups.

I am actually quite excited to see what might pay off in space. (Granted, given that you can make 1-200k an hr without being a master just by shooting stuff worries me that if mining is endowed with too much wealth it could really wack out the economy)

Question is what kind of minerals will we find in space? The same as ground minerals? You can easily collect ground minerals very easily and even while offline. Unless current schematics would require materials only found in space or any new craftables need space resources then everyone will follow the path with less resistance: ground mining only and not bother with mining in space.

Thats probably one of the first questions I would like answered about the expansion.

I really hope that I don't have to rely on other people to do this. I mean come on, it can't be exactly an engaging activity. How am I supposed to convince a group of people to be bored with me? I'll mine asteroids if they yield better, unique,or more resources than what I can get on the gorund. As a shipwright I need all the resources I can get, but it'll be a chore in and of itself to get people to help.

Why is it boring? You'll be attacked by Pirates. If that does'nt excite you then maybe they could add obstacles, and a bomb ticking down to detonation as well? But anyway im just saying that group content is the funnest thing in this game. It wont be a chore to get people to do it if the rewards are there and it cant be done without a group. I mean im sure they will offer some easier safe places to Mine but hopefully the top quality resources everyone really wants will require some teamwork. That will give Pilots some needed content. But yeah if they make it like your wanting it to be then yes it will be just another boring element of the game to add to the list.

If Space mining yields a better collection of resources faster, I gaurantee people will do it. When JTL was first announced (when it was just Space Expansion), I was touting the need for mining in space. If you still have all your enemies coming after you, then space-mining will be interesting.

But what we really need is a transport based economy (still basically secondary to resources of course), which is kinda too late to implement, but it would have made space more important, as it would have made smugglers and blockade runners more important. Especially if there was legal or illegal methods of crago hauling. A transport based economy would have ensured a true space quester atmosphere to the game, even for those without JTL, because they would need people to get there stock from one place to another, and it would create a needed interdependancy. It would also enhance the possible dangers in trading in certain regions.

If only Privateer/Freelancer gave the Devs some inspiration...

How is it boring? Have you played any of the other games with space mining? Fly to an asteroid, scan it for content, mine away. There's no flying around and chasing pirates. If you're doing that you're not mining. Sure if you're mining asteroids in Dathomir space you can have fellow players manning turrets to keep pirates away. After you clear the spawns what's next? How does requiring group play equal content?I'm not wanting mining to be boring. If I could think of a way to make it exciting then I'd go for it. I do not want, however, have to rely on others to be able to mine the same areas or whatnot that team players do. It's limiting. As somebody who works night shifts I play during WAY OFF peak hours. It's not always easy to get a group in the first place, let alone get them up in a MP ship. The thing I like about this game over others it the fact that 90% of the content is open to all players not just mega guilds and groups. I can develope my characters, and enjoy the game solo.

Try Freelancer. I think it would be much the same experience.
