I go after Tier 5 TIEAdvance and Interceptors in Kessels (since they don't have rear-mounted turrets.. lol).. my first kill ever in Kessel, I looted a level 8 booster with 2995 energy, 47 top speed, 198 consumption rate.. I was like

No, I have gotten low level loot even on Tier 5s. The best way to get loot seems to be taking Tier 4 destroy duty missions. Looted a Level 7 reactor with 37K power and 20K mass today doing a duty mission.

I have.
After havingover 1000 kills in Kessel, you get some STRANGE stuff. The absolute worst was a Level 2 piece of armor that dropped from a Tie Interceptor. Go figure.

Sorry, I mean I have gotten a lot of low level stuff on Tier 5s. (edited my previous post)

Hey, have you ever gotten loot off of a Tier 5 Tie Interceptor that has more mass than the Interceptor is supposed to have? The funniest was this 50.2 recharge Level 10 capacitor with nearly 65K mass.

I don't bother with the gunboats. I'm usually overt in Kessel for a challenge, and flying at a snail's pace behind a gunboat is the way I got my first PvP death. Last night I looted three L10 engines, an L10 blaster, an L9 blaster, and an L8 cap with decent storage. I've got the entire zone patterned out, from Spot 1-10, and a few spots marked that always seem to be jumping.
I haven't noticed a marked difference between the loot that comes from the gunboats and the loot that comes from T5 fighters. And yes, I know you can still get crap from T5. For that reason alone, I leave the gunboats alone - let a privateer with three projectile weapons eat them up...I'd rather take out ten fighters in the time it takes me to take out one gunboat.
I'll start targetting the gunboats once I get my Oppressor specced out. Once it's done, she'll be a thing of absolute beauty, but I'll be damned if I'll overt in her, as the REed components in it would be worth MILLIONS in the open market.

Is it possible that the loots were toned down in order to stimulate the SW market? After all, crafted components are supposed to be better than looted, but so far I've had zero need to buy anything for my ship, it's all loot. If I am right then it's "working as intended", and well, SOE=SOL again.

L00t is not alltogether better then crafted stuff, Reactor's i.e. are only better when you reverse engineer them out of loot. In the normal case of un RE'd loot the crafted ones are better.
That goes for various parts of Equipment. Weapons however are usually much better looted and killer when reverse engineered.
