Thread: anyone else happy with the mandal motor nerf?
Maybe I'm misreading you, but the nerfing of the 92.2 speed engine actually happened with the last patch and not with the one that is going on right now. The reason the devs listed the nerf in the current patch notes is because it was a stealth nerf before and people have been complaining about it quite a bit, and I think they figured they needed to give an explination to get people to shut up about it.

I'd like to see an engine revamp, because the current system is just quite dumb. The only crafted engine that seems to be able to compete with the 92.2 engine are Mark V engines, and even these will have quite lacking pitch and yaw stats to reach speeds above that. This means that small fighters (TIE interceptors, A-wings, TIE advanceds) can't really get up to the speeds they should. As it is now, large ships have the bigger potential for high speed. That's just not right.
Amen. Exclamation mark.
It seems really stupid that the A-wing is a tier 4 ship but you can't mount any high level equipment in it. I /have/ a looted 79.8 engine in my A-wing. With engine overload, my max is 1037. I have a PA-mate that can outrun me with the same mods in his X-wing because he has the allowable mass for a faster, higher-level engine. How right is that?
What we need is just a few engines (level 8, 9 and 10) that offer top speed (around 95 or above) with a lower mass that can only be used in a specific ship type. But since I can already see a dozen counter-issues with that, I know it will never happen. And if it did, something would get so nerfed, it would defeat the purpose.

Yeah, I understand that. My point remains - level 8, 9 and 10 engines are just too big for an A-wing to hold without sacrificing a weapon, shields, etc. If A-wings are supposed to be elite ships (tier 4) then there should be an engine or two to go in the bloody thing - an engine that gives them the speed they so rightly deserve.
Well, the balancethe changecreates is much more imortant, actually.
I mean, I'm with you. I accidentally gave mine away with the rest of my loot like a dumbass. Now I can't find one. It'd be awesome to have it back.
But, it does throw things off-balance. It the longrun, everyone and their grandma would have Awings/Interceptors.
Now, it evens things up.

I agree in part with your points, but what i do disagree with is this. The A-wing may be a tier 4 ship, that is only due to its maneuverability. The ship is listed as being really unstable to fly thus needing a highly skilled pilot to man. Your choice is limited in the A-wing, you can drop a powerfull engine in if you like, you just need to skimp in other areas. I however use an 88 speed and or a 75 speed looted engine, a really light, small CAP a Level 1 Reactor, a good crafted shield generator and a looted level 8 gun. if you want armor put the bare minimum on. The size difference between an A-wing and an X-wing isnt an even fair compairison. Even on the X-wing you have to pick and choose how you load it out. If your going too slow in your A-wing its due to your own decisions.

Actually nothing could be further from the Truth.
First, one engine that you get as a reward once can't possibly cause an imbalance especially with decay.
Second, Ship Wrights can't even come close to making a comparable engine. If they could I would buy 1 in a heart beat instad of endlessly grinding looking for one.
Third, this change caused an even bigger imbalance. They should have made the speed change retroactive so all people with the engine would be changed to 79. But now in PvP anyone with the 92.2 engine will win and in PvE they have a much easier time of it especially since the NPC ships were speeded up so much in the same patch.
Balance means everyone is equal and thus Balanced. But after this nerf we have 2 groups the haves and the have nots, so don't go telling me thats for balance. It's taken a balanced system and made it imbalanced. If everyoine had the 92.2 engine then how is that unbalanced?
Anyone who has a 92.2 speed engine now that uses it for PvP, won't have a 92.2 engine for very long.
This affects both of the 2 problems people have with their ships (speed & mass).
And for the player that can't get to (or through) tier 4, thier stuck with crappy looted lvl 7 engines or massive, so-so lvl 8's now.
The player made lvl 7 can be made with a little more speed, but poor Yaw/Pitch/Roll & much higher mass.
So only Master Pilots get the 90+ engines, but that's off because once you hit master, there isn't much to do.
All the stuff the masters get (except for the Multi-ship) is what you needed to get to master in the first place!?!
I think this is an attemt to get people back playing on the ground (along with heavier damage to your ship/equipment & the new "loot" on planet).
Or maybe it's "Earth & Beyond 2" (kill it a little more with each patch, so you can drop the game & save money when enough people quit).
truewildman wrote:Ehhh, I wouldn't call all level 8's so-so.Mine started out 103.3 speed, and it's 108.7 speed now after RE'd. And it's only 26k mass.
But I bet you got that engine before the new patch. That engine is probably gone now as well.

88 speed or 75 speed is not much compared to the fact that there can be 100+ speed engines crafted. You can't ever mount these on an A-wing or a TIE interceptor because they are just too big.
Sure, A-wings should be weak when it comes to shields, weapons and armor. They should also be one of the fastest ships. The problem, as I see it, is that one engine will perform very similar in a big bulky freighter and in a small, fast fighter. There is just a nominal loss of top speed when the engine is mounted to the freighter. This ensures that big ships have the better potential for actual speed, since they can spare so much mass. Small fighters like the A-wing or TIE interceptorcan't place much bigger than crafted engines with a speed of 70-90, while a B-wing or Nova without any problems at all can mount level 5 109 speed engines to their chassis. To me, this is just wrong...
I think it all would work better if the "speed" stat on engines are removed completely. Let the actual speed be a product of the engine mass and the chassis mass (with a small modifier for actual energy output, or "quality" of the engine). Place a 40k mass engine in an A-wing, and it should rocket alongat insane speeds. Place the same engine in a freighter, and it should have a fairly good cruising speed. Place a 10k engine in an A-wing, and it should have a fairly good cruising speed. Place the same engine in a freighter, and it should crawl along... Well, you get the picture I think.
