It's probably quicker to reach the point in the quests where you get one.

While this might be true, I found that the reward tractor beam is pretty much useless. While it does increase the yield by 2 to 3 times, I found that it took4 to 5 times longer to reel asteroids in using this tractor. I am hopeful that the player crafted tractor beam performs better.

I actually found the tractor beam sped things up quite a bit. If I set my weapons groups to 1: My favorate cannon 2: Mk 3 Mining Laser and 3: Tractor beam. I would just tap the asteroid once or maybe twice by hitting the number key 2, then split the chunk into smaller chunks by spamming 2, then reel it in with the beam by hitting 3. It is somewhat tedius, but I got much higher yield this way. The mining definately is more effieciant if you use the weapons independently

i have been using my tractor beam a LOT, and i noticed that i have gotten zero asteroid chunks (strange, colorful, glowing, anceint, etc) since i switched over from mining lasers. is this a bug or just bad luck?

Bad Luck most likely.

In beta I got most of my unusual chunks from tractor beaming (Of course, new bugs can arrive but I can't do any mining yet as my server doesn't have RotW, but give it a little longer, I'd generally mine a few k of asteroid between chunks)

I've gotten several of the strange asteroid chunks already, and I've gotten them both while using the tractor beam and while using just blasters. So your lack of those would appear to just simply be bad luck. I was really wondering if there was any point to the crafted tractor beam, does it allow you to bring in larger chunks? is it more efficient? if there is absolutely no point to it then why not simply stay with the quest tractor beam.

Tractor beams are more efficient than simply mining with lasers. You will bring in a higher Yield when using it. I would assume that a player crafted beam gives you an even higher yield but have not had the chance to test it.

and i'm sure you can cut the mass down by crafting a tractor beam
